So as a Health Insurance agent I'm of the opinion the whole thing was designed to destroy the private health insurance industry forcing us even closer to a single payor system. These current concessions are being made to keep the legislation alive through the mid-term elections. Thoughts/opinions?

The Democrats want single payer, but single payer has to be funded by tax revenues, which we don't have, and the public would not stand for a major tax increase. They had to find a way to finance a broad expansion of health insurance some other way. The answer was to subsidize high risk customers through sale of high cost, high benefit plans to low risk customers, the young and the healthy. So ObamaCare is an intermediate step, until they can make single payer acceptable and the government can pay for it.

The insurance companies went along to guarantee their own existence for the near future and to grab all those new customers. And to keep out a public option, which was also discussed at length. So ObamaCare was seen as temporary, but now seems to be self-destructing prematurely.

What does "single payer" actually mean?

It means most people don't have private insurance. The government pays the bills, like a more comprehensive form of Medicare for everyone. There may or may not be co-pays or deductibles, etc., but the government is essentially the only insurance company for all but the well to do who always find another option for private care.

Carried to the extreme, in nationalized medicine, the doctors are employees of the government, which also owns the clinics and hospitals.

when tommy Thompson was the head of HHS he was in Milwaukee giving a speech. According to him, government run hospitals always put patients at risk and the private sector always provides more bang for the buck

i feel some in the government want to run it, because they can do it better in their mind

time to start working for the government - eventually when everyone working for the government - or living off the government with unemployment/disability/foodstamps someone will decide system is not sustainable
