In the DRF and several other publications, when a horse has a Route race in its' PPs, there are listed 4 times in the race (23.1, 47.1, 111.4, 136.2), but 5 calls for lengths behind (7.25, 5.5, 3.75, 3.5, 1.5). My question is which of the first two lengths behind numbers (in this race 7.25 or 5.5) goes with the first actual time in the race (23.1)? Why 4 times, but the 5 lenghts behind? Thanks!

The first three times match to the first three entries for lengths behind the leader.

The fourth listing for lengths behind leader (3.5 in your example) is for the point of call 1/8th from the finish...no time is given for this point in the race.

23.1 7.5 1/4
47.1 5.5 1/2
111.4 3.75 3/4
....... 3.5 7/8
136.2 1.5 fin

I am assuming that you are not looking at Trakus data and therefore if you are viewing Equibase/DRF data you should take a look at their charts and you will find the times for the “eighth mile” call in some races. The 6F will have the 5F time, the 7F will have the 6F time, at some racetracks you will get the 7F time in the mile race, and of course you will have the mile time in the 1-1/8 mile race.

The most difficult last “eighth mile” time will be the 1m40, 1m70, and 1m1/16 distance.

For it is worth, I did a comparison of SDs of 6F races and Mile and 1/16 races. I expected the average SD of the 8 1/2 F to be between 1.4 and 1.5 larger than 6F average SD. (8.5/6) It turn out to be around 1.2. Never did figure out why. I decide on that information that a length of 6F race was worth 1.2 more than a race of a 8.5F. This study was done many years ago when Beyer method for speed ratings was a new idea.

this could be due to the extra rating at the route effectively "shortening" the races. i think the truth was always going to be somewhere between quirin-kuck style 1 pt per length at all distances and beyer style proportional time. didn't cj himself ultimately settle on such a scale when he reset the "99" to represent ghostzapper's top???
