As you get older this is what you will face if you haven't already.
From Forbes
"Older workers are still suffering in the aftermath of the Great Recession. More than half the people aged 50 and older who participated in a recent AARP survey (http://states.aarp.org/aarp-finds-age-discrimination-rampant-in-new-york-city-for-50/) said they had either experienced or witnessed age discrimination in the workplace. Yet four out of five Americans over 50 say (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/oct/15/retirement-thing-past-4-5-older-workers-say-they-c/) that they are going to have to delay their retirement plans and work well into their golden years. These two factors together have createda crisis for baby boomers (http://www.forbes.com/sites/deborahljacobs/2011/11/16/boomers-rewriting-the-next-chapter/).
Companies looking to ditch older employees can be creative in the ways they try to avoid age discrimination claims. Here are 11 of their sneakiest ploys."

Read the article to find out what they are and what you will likely face. If you are over 60, then you have likely dealt with one or more of them.Number three, Suddenly Stupid is perhaps the cruelest.

There's no need to be sneaky. Unless you have an employment contract your employer can terminate you at will. It's when employers start making up stuff that they get into trouble. The key is not to give a specific reason. Typically it's said, "We'd like to go in a different direction."

Not age discrimination so much as longevity and the costs that go with it.

Lots of smart companies are now hiring retirees.

I agree. Smart companies do that.
I disagree that there are lots of smart companies.
Ageism exists.

Right, if you're not considered a victim these days you haven't tried hard enough looking for the reasons why....

it's the cost plain and simple. if you're an older worker my only advice is to make sure your function cannot rather easily be replaced by lower cost people. you need to make sure that there is at least a perception of value to the higher wages that they pay you. you have to make it readily apparent that it would be a mistake to let you go, that your function cannot be replaced by a younger less experienced worker. don't always count on them rewarding your loyalty or longevity alone.

companies lose a lot in the way of experience when they get rid of the senior people, but many companies will take that risk, especially because experience is hard to quantify. if you have the type of management that is under pressure sometimes dollars and cents are all that matter.

not to worry too much though, based on the education, work ethic, and skillset of the younger folks I come across, there is not much to worry about. It's getting where it's hard to find someone who can even pass a drug test.
