Received my 1st SS deposit in the checking account today. Work is now a thing of the past.

I MAY use my electrical licenses for some light work such as inspections, consultations, permit pulling, etc... but the days of actual hard work are over. I guess

I am now an entitlement anchor.

Congratulations! (I'll be receiving my first Civil Service Retirement System pension check on 1 November.) (After 35 years of working for the government, I'll still be feeding from the public trough -- just the other end!)

You've earned every bit of it....

Finding a good balance between relaxation, and staying active with things you like doing,
is apparently the best way to go.

Live long and prosper.

Congratulations, and welcome to the ranks of those who the eagle shits on every third Wednesday of the month (my wife is the fourth Wednesday of every month). I heard somewhere that we'll be getting a big 1-1/2% increase in January. Don't get too complacent, though; those Tea Party types are looking for socialistic programs to repeal as we speak.

No, we TEA Party types are trying to cut government spending and waste as well as taxes, so that there will still be such a thing as Social Security and Medicare in a few years. The left still has not figured out that when you finally run out of Other People's Money, very bad things start to happen.

CJD, I'm curious, do you have to make any choices about signing up to receive SS? What, if anything, did you do in advance?

I ask b/c I have heard a radio commercial as of late which basically states, if you don't do it correctly you can lose thousands of dollars in benefits. I assume the possible loss is over a lifetime. What else it could entail is unknown to me. They tout a web based service, and, as expected, you have to sign up and give a lot of personal information before you can learn anything.

TIA

Go to this site:

www.socialsecurity.gov (http://www.socialsecurity.gov)

It is free and easy.
If you are retirement age a benefit amount will be given to you.
You can select, if eligible, when you would like to start receiving benefits.
State the month /year when you wish in the response section.

I selected October and voila yesterday the 1st one was in my bank account.

BTW- I filed in July

It's all a bs waste of time. Do what cj's dad said, and go to the website he linked. Unlike healthcare.gov, the Social Security website works fine. If there's a Social Security office in your town, you can even stop there, or else just call the toll-free number. The main decision to make with Social Security is whether to take the reduced benefit early or not.

I just calculated that I can retire at age 119.
If I cut back a bit now.

Maybe you should look into working for Organizing for America. That, and passing a race or two, might let you pull it off at 118-1/2.

Cograts! Just don't deplete funds for us young'ns (58 here).

If you're good at the trades look into becoming a home inspector. Good money but you have to be on your game as if you miss something a lawsuit is not far behind.

Many years of good health to enjoy your time away.

Update ---- Just asked to head up a 277 day project for a Waste Water Treatment Facility 70 miles from home. Mileage 60 cents per mile at 140 round trip, a raise, seems much like free $$$. What would you do ??? I can bank the SS and maybe have a year or so to visit cj in OKC.

I want to spend time relaxing but my routine is getting so boring.

Reminds me of the old joke where the manager of the water department retires and starts a consulting business. He gets an emergency call to fix some machinery because the water isn't running. He comes in and twists a knob and leaves after five minutes and the water is running fine. He sends in a bill for $2050. The new manager calls him up and said what are you billing us for... It only took you five minutes to fix and all you did was turn a knob.

The retired manager said, "Well its $50 for the service call and $2000 for knowing which knob to turn."

Dennis,

Only you know what is best for you.

That said, if extra income is important or helpful to you at some point in the future, taking this job would seem like the right thing to do. The future has no guarantees when it comes to employment opportunities. Knowing the duration is limited is helpful, and recognizing that someone values your skills and wants you to work for them is a very good on the emotional bank account. :)

A good reason for not taking the job would be if you feel it will impact your health significantly in a negative way.

All the best whichever way you decide!

Chris

Not that my opinion means jack to you, but it sounds as though you might actually be happier working than not working. If that's the case, then work. If it isn't the case, don't work. Don't worry, be happy.

Just make sure you don't make too much and have pay back some SS. Otherwise go for it.

CJd, I'd not seen this, as I don't get downstairs too often. I'm glad you've reached the time that you have a choice whether or not you walk out the front door each morning. What a great thing after decades! I wish you good health and good times, wherever your path leads.

A lot of men retire and find themselves bored out of their minds. Its just too sedentary, unless one's walking a golf course 4 days a week. Which, for sure, isn't for everyone. Do as much as you like for as long as you like. You've earned the choice.
