Just an FYI, if you want your age known, it can be done in your profile. Just set your birthday.

I'm with Dave. Once a 19 year old male always a 19 year old male.

Actual mileage... Odometer just flipped to 53.

6 out out 61 under the age of 40. 5 out of 61 not named Wiffleball.

Good to see all that NTRA advertising money is paying off. On the bright side, as the country ages and baby boomers retire, more oldsters to fill the pools. Until they die off. Then it will only be Wiffleball and Bubbles.

wow!
I am same age as you. And I can still get thru a crowd pretty fast if must.
Had to make a mad dash through the back yard at Saratoga last summer to get in a bet.
I could have killed someone if I was not intently watching where I was going.
I won't be doing that again any time soon.
After I made it. I thought, "gee, that was really stupid"..So don't sweat it if you can't make it to the window for the 'evacuation bet'...

64 years young, retired since 62. I can still cowtrail on an MX bike and shoot in the low 80s in golf. Age is just a number, if you've taken care of yourself during your life. I drink once per year, on New Years Eve (maybe a half pint of good scotch over a 4 or 5 hour time period), and never do drugs, unless you consider decaf a drug, LOL. Heck, I don't even take aspirin or Tylenol unless I have to.

Horse racing has room for improvement in it's marketing, and use of the mass media.

That's putting it mildly!

I have found the Fountain of Youth - it's located at the Canterbury simulcast center. Seriously, I am 38 and feel young around aging horseplayers. Steve Crist has made the argument that this has always been an old man's game. Older people simply have more time and disposable income. It would be interesting if somebody had demographic information that would enable comparison of horseplayers through different decades.

My suspicion is that Crist makes a pretty compelling case, although I think it is overblown. There are several factors that annihilate the replacement rate of dying horseplayers. One main reason has to do with technology, with new forms of interpersonal social capital. Horseracing (in N. America) has refused to adopt technology that forms the bedrock of modern social networks. Furthermore, horseracing has refused to seriously compete with other forms of gaming, instead trying to use its clout to extract casino subsidies that keep it on perpetual life support and contingent on the whims of politicians. Finally, as we have seen with the recent trainer scandals, horseracing has become synonymous with poor treatment or outright abuse of animals. This is particularly detrimental in today's era, with the newfound focus on animal welfare.

New blood!Good to see you here man.I was about your age when I got into this. That year a book came out by a guy who I admire and am influenced by to this day,James Quinn, called "Ontrack/Offtrack:Playing The Horses In Troubled Times".Don't believe it entirely. This is a great game.Find your spots and balance your passion and reason. They serve each other well.

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome. I was enthralled by Zenyatta almost becoming perfect when I was 17. I love the sport. I am going to school for journalism just so I can cover horse racing. People may say its not worth it but when you love your job its worth it. I am one of those people that look at every side of the story not just side that I am for. Just a side note I hate people who ask the stupid fantasy questions like who would win Secretariat or Man 'O War or whose better Ruffian, Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, or Lady's Secret? (Who cares, appreciate the fact that we had them) You can only compare horses who can and are willing and ready to run against each other.

Good timing!I got into the game in 96 when Cigar was in the midst of his streak."They" say it's an unappealing sport to the younger generation(s).Those laws don't apply to us.I loved it when I was 22 and still do even moreso at 40.Because we are the anachronisms we invent the game and it's truth for ourselves. That's awesome you are into journalism. You can start a crusade with a pen in hand.Go for it all.Just pace yourself!

RacingFan1992

The only reason why it is so unappealing is because you do not have one simple team to a region like football or basketball. The players change constantly and those who love horses find it mortifying if they see a break down. As Frank Y. Whitely once said after Ruffian was euthanized, "That's Horse racing."

This is a world unto itself. That makes it all the more interesting to me.And awesomely you are the one that decides wins and losses. The residue is some of these colts, filles, horses, mares, and geldings cling to your soul for life. Not every player is like that.I couldn't imagine it any other way.Passion fuels reason and reason fuels passion. It is mortifying to see a breakdown. It's brought me to tears more than once.Honor the fallen by loving and appreciating the living. These are big beautiful courageous beasts. They are what makes the game waaaaay better than a turn of the card or a pull of the 1 arm bandit.

BIG HIT
