A Montana teacher gets a 30 day sentence for raping his 14 year old student (The student subsequently committed suicide) while a Florida woman gets 20 years for firing a warning shot into the ceiling to scare off her abusive husband (he wasn't even hit).

How can this even be possible? :bang:

did you actually read the links?? I did, and didn't need to ask why it was possible. In one case, you have a bad (if not senile) judge, and in the other, the judge committed judicial error in jury instruction. Both cases are under review for new sentencing/trial.

Both cases are under review for new sentencing/trial.My point wasn't so much the guilt of each individual, rather the sentencing structures. Where is the common sense in these types of sentences.

I realize both cases are under scrutiny. The difference in sentences are just crazy!

We have a neat plan in this country, on how to deal with our mentally challenged - it's called the judicial system.

I think that you're selling that plan a little short, Tom. You need to include the legislative and executive branches as well.
