View Full Version : Lost a Folder!

I wanted to move a folder (directory) from my desktop onto the C: drive root directory.

So I clicked on Start and then Computer to bring up the directory window.

Then I dragged and dropped the folder on my desktop onto the icon in the directory window that says "OS ( C: )"

I looked into the C: directory and the folder was not there.

I've tried searching for it, but it doesn't show up and it's not in the Recycle Bin.

Could it be marked as a hidden folder?

Any help appreciated.

Just a thought, the directory should be c:\. If the designation is C:\os then that is the directory it is in.

try going thru your windows search for the name of the folder and search the entire directory,

I am not a guru,...just a thought

Thanks, but all my directors under the computer folder are like that.

OS (C: )
RECOVERY (D: )
Local Disk (K: )
Removable Disk (L: )

etc.

I dragged the folder onto the OS (C: ) and dropped it there, but it is nowhere to be found.

Here's a request to gather some information so those in the message thread can better help.

Let's try this approach. Let's use the command prompt and issue some commands then have you copy the response and paste it here.

(1) Click the start button
(2) Where is says 'Search programs and files' there should be a cursor already. Type in the following: cmd
(3) In the window that opens, enter this: cd \
(4) You should now have a prompt of just "C:\>" which means you are at the root on the C: drive.
(5) Enter: dir /a:d
(6) Anywhere on the command window, perform a right mouse button click which will cause another window to pop open then click on "select all" which will cause that window to turn while. Without doing anything else, just press the Enter key. Pressing the enter key causes the system to copy everything in that window to the clip board.
(7) Finally, reply to this message thread and paste the contents of the clip board into the thread either as is or as a part of the message board wrap quote tags.

Here's what I get when I do the above:

What are you using to view the folders/directories?

My Computer
or
Windows Explorer

if you are using "my computer" try the edit menu..... " Undo"

unless you have rebooted etc

it's probably hidden now........since you put it in a hidden folder or something like that

You can open my computer hit "tools" "folder options" and check or uncheck the appropriate box to show "hidden files"

Try a system restore and see if it is there.

Try a system restore and see if it is there.
What kind of restore?

If you are referring to the native Windows function for managing the system found in the Control Panel Action Center, no. That is not going to help locate/recover a misplaced/lost user folder.

How about doing a search for the folder name?

Are you sure you dragged a folder and not a shortcut?

It sounds to me like you tried to move an entire directory and not an
individual file. You have it listed as (directory). If you only have one
drive to begin with then windows will assign a new letter to the directory.
Try looking for a new directory on the C drive.
