Does anyone use Amazon Cloud Services to back up their business files? We currently back-up our server daily with an off-site data center, but we don't have immediate access to the backed-up files (the off-site data center serves as emergency back up). I'd prefer to have access to our files anywhere, at anytime. Thoughts?

I have had a "hidden" website at Network Solutions for 10 years or more. The cost for UNLIMITED storage and many terabytes of bandwidth is only $26 per month.

This includes streaming capabilities, FTP and all the other amenities. It also includes an unlimited number of websites.

I do not see how Amazon can compete with that.

Dave,

I'd like to able to access our Excel, Word and PowerPoint files from anywhere. Will a hidden website achieve this? We use Network Solutions for our email.

As far as I know, yes.

At least if you have Excel, etc. installed on the machine you are accessing.

FWIW and in regards to webhosting.

I'd suggest reading the fine print in the Users Agreement and their definition of allowed and/or proper use of files.

The trend towards Cloud hosting as backup services may change the language as related to shared web hosting, however it's not there yet.

Can you access all your data on partly cloudy days?

For what you describe here, you should at least consider using a source control system, like :

http://git-scm.com/

http://subversion.apache.org/

or

http://www.perforce.com/

If you need a remote repository you can either host it on your own server or use a commercial one, like:

https://github.com/

or

https://www.assembla.com/spaces/kasosoft/start

git and svn are open source. Perforce is a commersial product, mostly used by enterprise companies.

Assembla plans start from 9.99 / month:
https://www.assembla.com

Github is free for open source projects.

You can always build your own server using any ISP with very low cost (less than $10 / month)

See for example:

Thanks! Just wondered what they were getting nowadays.

What does a permanent IP address cost from the ISP ? For that server.....I haven't priced one in years?

In my case (I am using bluehost) it costs me $29.95 for 1 dedicated IP address per year ($2.50 per month)...
