The Jack Van Berg story, is a good read. Not a handicapping book, but for some of us who have been around the game for 30 years it brings back a ton of good memories. It is quite a story, that takes you back to the hay day of racing at the likes of Detroit, Aksarben, and other tracks that are gone.
Very quick read, and a good gift for someone that is into horses.

I heard and interview with his not long ago - I could spend a day buying him beer and listening to him!

Met him in Iowa while training as younger man. Had a chance to spend some time with him and while he is a really great guy, he scared me a little with his frank nature and no bullsh*t attitude. He reminds me of an old marine Sargent. He is old school and I find it kind of sad that our industry has passed him by. Trainers like Jack are a dying breed. It was really neat to sit and listen to him and my boss talk about the old days when Marion was still around and the crazy times back in the late 60's. A moment I will cherish forever.
