The 3rd at Del Mar today is 1m and 3/8ths. The most recent races for most of the horses range from 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 to 1 1/2. Virtually all of them have a race at 1 1/16 in the last few outings. Does it make sense to make an initial comparison based on the most recent 1 1/16 race for each, at least to sort out contenders? Anyone found anything else that helps judge the ability of a router to go longer than it has before?

There is a method used at Pace and Cap called "Hat's Marathon Method". It looks for the horses that run the best mile times in there races. Bill Lyster is one of the best in using this method. Here is one of his theards.

Any race longer than 1 1/8th i usually skip because its really hard to determine how the race will shape up from a pace profile.

I was thinking the same thing, but thought I would play around with it for the experience.

this is what I do.. 4/8 is 1/2 so I look to see if any of these guys ran longer.

Then I see how they ran at 1 1/8th and see how they were finishing.. and then I check to see how big is the field. In shorter fields usually the leaders can be runaway winners.. although I think this one was won by a horse that was not a leader, right?
