Took my Boss' bets to Philly Park one day and booked some exacta
with two longshots. He may have had it 5 times and I was
in trouble for $800.

I had about 90 minutes before I had to leave and went on
a run and made just over $700 before I had to take off.

I was still short like $60, but figured maybe he was going to
give me a tip or something anyhow. Nope - worked the next
shift or two to pay him back.

In my mind I can still see that exacta, the winner won by 10 and the
place horse was second by another 8 lengths.

Not good!!!

I'm 32 when I was like 22 or so langfuhr(spelling) is racing on a Monday stakes or Sunday stakes at Belmont....father knows I'm going to freehold wakes me up
At 10am telling me to put a play on him.....he wanted 200 to win on this horse....

Of course the race goes off around 5 and I'm getting my d*** kicked in all day stuck about 400 And I'm running out of cash....but I still got dads 200 tucked away safely with my case 60

Now I'm tempted to start picking at this 200 but it's a hour to post....I take a walk over to the Barnes and noble to kill this hour wait....also I'm debating calling my father asking him if I can borrow 50(knowing he won 1900 2 days earlier at casino) I come up with another brainstorm

I take the 200 I fire in 100WP instead of the straight win bet looking to stuff all the money if he runs 2nd....of course he grinds the horse into the ground like sawdust in the lane....now im F*****....but he pays great in the middle.....either 11.00 and like 7.60 or $9.00 and 7.20 or sometimg like that...

Now I can't give him the money cuz then he will think I did sometimg dumb....instead I don't cash the ticket give it to him on at the Sunday night card game and luckily it kind of blew over,...I told him I couldn't remember what he said cuz I just woke up......thank god horse paid decent to place

when i lived in Saratoga with Jimmy The Greek, he used to clean me out every summer swapping horses. what that was is he picks a horse and bets it with me across the board, and in the same race i pick a horse and bet it across the board. we always went to eat at The Wishing Well every night, one night we were eating with Richie O'Connell and Hollywood Herbie McCauly and his wife Debby the night before the Jim Dandy. they were telling us how much they loved this New York Bred in the big race called THUNDER RUMBLE. naturally as sure as the grass is green, The Greek has first choice for the Jim Dandy and beats me to the punch on that horse. we are betting $50 w-p-s on every race, the horse i pick runs third his wins like a thief in the night and pays something like $53 to win, $24 for place and $10 for third. the only good thing i can say is that he wanted to double up on that race and i wouldn't let him.

Something happened a while ago which convinced me that I don't have the necessary luck that's required in order to book people for serious amounts.

My brother-in-law is the most unsophisticated gambler I have ever known...but that doesn't deter him from betting on the NBA with regularity. A couple of years ago, he was left without a "connection" during the basketball season...and he asked me to place his bets with my bookie.

It was beyond embarrassing.

Every week without fail I would have to pay the bookie for my brother-in-law's losses...to the point where the bookie himself started kidding me about my ineptness as a basketball bettor.

He wouldn't stop betting, so I got a bright idea. I was going to book the rest of his basketball bets myself just to teach him a lesson and prove my point...and I would refund his losses to him at the end of the season, after he made me a promise never to wager on another basketball game again.

Well...from the day I started booking his bets he went on a torrid winning streak...and ended up having the only winning season that he ever experienced in his gambling life.

He beat me for about $11,000...

A few years back I was working for a golf software company and I would go out to different events throughout the year with a co-worker to help the people running the tournament with the software and to show a face.... So me and a co-worker are at this JR PGA championship event... These kids we no older then 12 and were shooting around par... maybe a little over but it was incredible. Me and my co-worker follow this threesome from hole 1 and we decide to start betting on every shot. Drives... Fairway/Rough... Second shot Green/Miss... Putts... Odds... depending on how long the putts were we gave odds... Everything else was even money. Through 17 holes I am up $460... We get to the 18th green and now I'm up $500..... A kid who looked like a miniature version of Babe Ruth who we were calling "The Babe" the entire day is on the green and was anywhere from 80-90 feet away. I say i'll give you 50-1 on this putt min bet $10/max bet $100 (thinking he would bet $10 to attempt to get his money back but hoping he bets more so I can take it from him).... He says "max bet" just as the kid was in the backswing...****ing kid sunk it... I still think about it to this day... Not only because of the $4500 I lost but the real odds of him making that putt had to be well over 200-1.

I've parked at the Barnes and Noble to avoid paying
$2 way too many times to be proud of.

I even parked at the mall and walked on longer days.

Then again I played at Freehold when there was no building there.

One afternoon in either my freshman, or soph, year of HS in Ireland (it was called 3rd or 4th form there) the principal (headmaster) brought me into his office for a lengthy interview.
Had I been taking bets on soccer matches (English pro and international games) here at school?
"Yes"...I answered "Hadn't occurred to me that I was doing anything wrong, sir"

It had been a really nice side earner for the 6 months, or so, I had been doing it.
Figure I came within an inch of being expelled, but received a stern "cease and desist" warning instead.
Eventually, it dawned on me why I was probably allowed to stay in that school.
It had to help my case that my biggest customers were teachers.
Some things are best kept quiet....... ;)

Never. With my luck, somebody would have hit the most stupid bet on planet Earth and I'd have to pay up out of pocket.

I loved that horse Thunder Rumble. Thanks for the story. Made me remember that horse - what a warrior.
