The Prez and Nancy P. say that Obamacare is going to save people money......

Oops.........not in Ohio

Columbus Dispatch: Aug 1st 2013

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/public/2013/08/01/Ohio-healthcare-exchange-rates.html

"The online health exchange will offer more than 200 different plans from 12 insurance companies approved by the insurance department. Premiums will cost on average $332.58 a month in 2014, compared to $236.29 this year.

For small group health insurance plans, six companies offering 184 plans were approved to sell on the exchange. Those plans will cost on average $401.99 a month in 2014, compared to $341.03 this year.

“Ohio has traditionally had a more competitive health insurance market than other states with a wider range of prices and choices – from simple, high deductible coverage to comprehensive, full service plans,” said Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, who serves as director of the Department of Insurance. “ That level of diversity is essentially outlawed under Obamacare so Ohio's rates and premiums are going up significantly, and going up more than in other states where prices were already high.”

they ain't alone...

Savannah Morning News:
GEORGIANS WHO will be forced to buy health insurance under Obamacare later this year should be prepared to dig deeply into their wallets — then hold on for dear life.

That’s because of heart attack-inducing sticker shock.

The premiums for the five health insurers that will be offering policies in Georgia’s federally run insurance exchange are “massive,” according to Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.

“Insurance companies in Georgia have filed rate plans increasing health insurance rates up to 198 percent for some individuals,” Mr. Hudgens wrote in a July 29 letter to Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the president’s point person on Obamacare.

"In Orange County, where Irvine is located, the three-fourths of the 25-year-old population that is in good health will have their premiums jacked by 95 percent".

"Experts in the economics of health insurance understand that this has been Obamacare’s central flaw from the beginning (http://www.avikroy.org/2011/01/you-think-health-care-is-pricey-now.html). The law’s heavy-handed approach to the health insurance market massively drives up premiums for the average person (http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2012/03/22/how-obamacare-dramatically-increases-the-cost-of-insurance-for-young-workers/)"

this is from Politico:
http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/mythbusters-obamacare-edition-94886.html
Two states are playing starring roles in Republicans’ “Obamacare rate shock” warnings: Ohio, which said its health insurance rates for individuals will go up 88 percent, and Indiana, which estimated its individual rates will rise by 72 percent.

There’s just one problem: Both states’ insurance departments tell POLITICO that people’s premiums won’t necessarily go up by that much.
For one thing, neither state was actually talking about premiums — they were talking about the basic cost of providing health insurance

neither state tried to distinguish between the four different levels of Obamacare coverage. They just mashed all of the costs together, so a casual customer would have no sense that some plans will be cheaper than others.

Kaiser Health Care News-a non partisan group-also had problems with the Ohio and Georgia stories.
http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2013/August/01/obamacare-insurance-premiums-exchanges-marketplaces.aspx

According to Kaiser insurance plans under Obamacare:
must cover a range of essential benefits that were not always covered in the past. That includes prescription drugs, hospitalization and maternity coverage. Consumers cannot be turned away or charged more because of health problems, as they can now in most states. Women cannot be charged more than men. In addition, the amount you'll have to pay out of pocket will be capped at $6,350 for singles or $12,700 for families.

Kaiser also points out that many of the cheap plans under the old system had extremely high deductibles and co-pays. Obamacare caps those.

Essentially, what we have here is insurance commissioners who have actively opposed Obamacare making spurious comparisons with no basis in fact.
