Great middle weight boxer. I remember watching the fight from MSG where he beat Benny "the kid" Peret. Peret died several days later form severe brain injury. Great video linked here:

Emile's fights with Dick Tiger were classic.

Great boxer, was never the same after the beating he put on Peret. The video of the fight is hard to watch.

Emile was a vey good fighter. He fought them all and never ducked anyone. Great fights with Dick Tiger, Nino Benvenuti, Joey Archer and many others. Three months before his fight with Griffith, Paret was knocked out by Gene Fullmer in a brutal fight. A lot of boxing people claim that was the fight that severely damaged him and Griffith just finished what was inevitable with Paret. Popular referee Ruby Goldstein was watching and not referring as he should in not protecting a helpless fighter. A terrible tragedy for all involved. If I am not mistaken, he never referred another fight.
I used to see Griffith doing roadwork all the time running on Blvd. East in Weehauwken NJ back in the early seventies. A very nice friendly man. RIP Emile.

Wow... thanks for posting this CJDad... completely missed it.

For those that are interested, there is a very good documentary type recounting of his career, life, and particularly the Paret episode, obviously. It relies heavily on an aged, somewhat demented (in the pugilistic sense) Griffith recounting his memories of what happened versus great old footage as well as the memories and opinions of Paret's family. It's actually hard to watch at times.

When a guy says R.I.P.... you get the sense that it really applies here... man seemed pretty tortured for most of his life.
