7/20/13 LaD - races 5 through 9, 50 cent pick 5, $441K carryover

Disclaimer: I don't play this circuit often. Yesterday, I invested a $1 ticket on two combinations - my selections ran 3rd, 3rd, 8th, 2nd and a DNF/vanned off.

Today, I'm pulling out all the stops, and investing a whopping $4. Looks pretty chalky, so I don't think the whole pool goes today - but with all the greedy players tossing money at this, even chalk could produce a nice overlay.

5th: :1: 3rd at 16-1, winner :5: at 6-1
6th: :3: 3rd at 9-2. :8: 4th at 6-5, winner :5: at 24-1
7th: :2: winner at 5-2
8th: :5: winner at 3-1
9th: :1: winner at 8-5

50 cent Pick 5 paid $11,983.60. Second leg won by the longest shot on the board. Odd that the carryovers the past four days have been $272K, $339K, $441K, and yesterday's $464,786. Only $24K added on a Saturday?

Hit the late double, and so once again I'll be back.

7/21/13 LaD - races 5 through 9, 50 cent pick 5, $465K carryover

I'd like to remove the disclaimer. I own this track. Two days, 14 bets, $170 invested, $300 returned, 76% ROI. I'm quitting my job and moving to Shreveport.

Feeling my oats, I'm not going to squander dough here on the Pick 5, as this cold ticket should be sufficient to hit it, though it won't take down the whole pool..... :)

Results for 7/21. Okay, I don't own the track. ROI now down to 0.12, as three days of wagers (24 bets, $276 in, $308 out) have me thinking retirement to Sportsmen's Paradise not right around the corner.

7/25/13 LaD - races 4 through 8, 50 cent pick 5, $493K carryover

In spite of the ruckus caused by Saturday's last-race-late-scratch-oops-unexpected-chalk-wins, I'm back and today looks like an outside chance the pool goes. According to my calculations, there are 55,440 combos today, so with $50K bet into the pool, there will be plenty of single combos out there.

Some nice picks there Muddy, with 4 out of 5 on both your tickets - I could only muster two winners.

Got a great ride from Ramirez in the last race to catch the late double. After six racing days at LaD across all the card, I've got a positive ROI of +0.48, 58 bets, $659 in, $966.80 out. Best of pick 5 tickets has had three winners, but not bad considering I've only made three "prime" bets. Today's Pick 5 starts with the 4th, picks coming soon.

The Pick 5 rolls again, after thinking the pool might go down three of the last six days.

4th: winner :2: at 11-1, :1a: 4th at 4-5
5th: winner :8: at 8-1, :2: 6th at 8-5
6th: winner :10: at 1-1
7th: winner :1: at 6-5, :2: at 6-1

Pick 5 pays $1,241.85, carryover of $627K

Two short priced winners on my ticket, and couldn't catch a cold on the rest. Was thinking the longer shots might come in the last couple of legs, but no, they were up front.

I'll be back on Thursday.

Track fast, turf firm, 71,148 combos. Man, I thought when the carryover hit a quarter mil, it would get hit within a few days, but just enough chalk keeps running in for multiple tickets to hit it. A couple of nice stakes today, and lots of combos - perhaps an upset or two with the "impossible" horse, and the pool will go down.

If my math is right, five winning tickets with the bomb in the first leg, and two medium shots. There has not been a jackpot (single ticket) winner since June 27th. I wonder if this rolls until closing day on 9/22? No large wagers for me the past few cards, so the ROI continues to slip:

81 bets, $934 wagered, $1018.80 returned, ROI of +0.09

I don't think it was handled well at all.

I loved the 'rainbow' at Gulfstream, but haven't played this due to what happened with the winner/non-winner.

I don't think it was handled well at all.

Can't argue with you. It'd be nice if the Louisiana racing board reviewed the incident, released details on the second winning quick pick ticket, and considered rule changes to avoid this problem in the future. I've never understood the logic of getting the "post-time" favorite for a scratch in a multi-race wager. They're two different pools. Going into the final leg, the payouts should be "locked in", be it a small consolation, refund or loss.

Unlike Beyer, I enjoy the jackpot wagers and hardly consider it to be a "cancer on the sport" or the liken it to the tracks "peddling crack cocaine". It raises fan interest, lets us little guys and even Grandma have a shot at a life changing score, without the big syndicates and player's pools buying up too many combos with the risk of a low payoff. Granted, it's not the kind of bet for serious money, but neither is Powerball.

Incidentally, the 'early favorite' (Adamo) that caused the ruckus over the winner/non-winner event on 7/20 and finished second as the late second choice is running in today's 5th race ( :7: ).

8/08/13 LaD - races 4 through 8, 50 cent pick 5, carryover $772K

Looks like track fast, turf firm, 100 degrees today. Some large fields and a couple of wide-open races. I come up with 104,544 combos. If a couple of the heavier chalks go down (i.e., the :3: in the 6th or the :13: in the last race), the jackpot may go today. Would not be surprised to see handle on the pool be a bit higher today. I'm surprised it's lasted this long, but surely it will get hit before the end of the meet?

The announcer saying I did nothing wrong when he did two major things wrong really bugged me.

I think they could have offered him $100K or so, not from the pool, and
I'd be satisfied.

I am okay with the wagers, if you are like Beyer and don't like them don't play them.

I went back and reviewed the thread where Travis explained what happened, as well as listening to his discussion on the Sirius XM Steve Byk show. I can't tell from your comment what the two major things he or LaD did that bugged you. But, since the scratch was announced early in the day, and the tote payoffs displayed were correct at the moment, I don't think the track or announcer did anything flagrantly wrong. The rules do need changing though.

You brought up a very good point that if you had the only live ticket and one of the legs was a winning chalk, if your other selection(s) got scratched in that same leg you would be screwed out of the pot for having multiple winning combinations. That would really suck.

BTW - I believe a 5 horse parlay for 50 cents on the winners would have paid $653.33, so the comment made by Travis on the Sirius radio show appears to be right - at least for yesterday.....

Well, it was a fun run. Hadn't played LaD for years. When the smoke and dust cleared, I made:

90 wagers totaling $1044, returning $1018.80 for an ROI of -0.024. Had a bet on the :2: in the 8th that didn't pan out, and missed the late double. D'oh! With my micro-rebates from TS and Xpressbet, it'll help close the gap to almost break even. Would help not to live in Illinois, as a couple of payouts probably got dinged by the surcharge.....

I may be back on closing day....
