August 23-sept 2 they are racing at the timonium fairgrounds.....I know there are plenty of Maryland fair grizzled veterans I'm reading you can only get in via paying $8 for fair admission.....it says track included in the $8....

People have to have angles around this....I'm there to gamble not pay $8 admission,..I'm not cheap out don't like paying $8 admission and $3 parking...if it was 1 day is deal with it but I'm looking to go the whole meet.....11x10=110!!

Anybody going to this meet?

get an racing license maybe as a groom or owner and get in that way on the backside. Would that work?

When I was younger I'd jump the half bent over fence at Yonkers to avoid the $4 admission....I usually always had passes to get into Monmouth and meadowland...there has to be a way to sneak into the racetrack portion of the fair

I'd love to hear stories of how people used to beat admission/parking prices....I'm sure everybody had there own stories

what we really need is for caesar's to take over the fair so we can park for free with our platinum cards!!

i will say that penn gaming has somewhat conditioned me for those $4.00 timonium sodas though. :D seriously, i forgot how expensive timonium can be.

this was one of the reasons I stopped going to ti monium years ago. it was always my favorite of all the Maryland tracks. even though the racing isn't as good as it used to be in the fields are small it's still a fun experience so I recommend you go at least one or two times.

Sounds like -30sville before you even make a play!!

Wow and your platinum for as few as time as you come down here?!

I expect to be there at least 7 of the 10 days. Most assuredly this will include both Fridays, both Saturdays, and Labor Day Monday. Any day PA members plan to go, they can join me in the Simulcast Area on the second level of the grandstand. It has A/C, decent tables and chairs, and a sizable no smoking area. The chairs and tables can be moved around as desired. The Simulcast area is also right next to a newly furnished bar area from which food can be ordered and taken out. Cover charge for the Simulcast area is $2, but well worth it. I can leave my laptop in there when I go outside to watch the live races.

As to lowering your admission cost, there are corporate sponsors (M&T Bank, Toyota, Pepsi, etc.) who I believe offer free day passes. I have been fortunate enough to have a stranger give me one outside the admission gate from time to time, but I'm not sure how to secure these day passes in advance. One year I did go into the fair office, and the secretary gave me a few. I have tried the M&T Bank route, but my local branch could not find out any further info. Perhaps some other Timonium veterans can tell us what they do.

For the days that I plan to attend, I'll be glad to get there early to save some tables and chairs for anyone else wanting to join me. I'll put up a thread close to opening day (08/23) to see who is interested.

I told the people at Turfway I'd give them $20 a day to sit in the seat I sat in for 5 years on the 4th floor and I was told no.I haven't been back since!

racing licenses in maryland run about $350.

A multi-jurisdiction owners license purchased at the Charles Town races costs $66 for the first year, then can be renewed each of the next four years for $30. ;)

I was gold from then I got to 5k tier points then I realized they had tier bonuses...I put in double header 500 tier point sessions which came to 1000 + 1000 bonus tier credits I got the 10k in a week for a total of 15k for diamomd..Via 5 cent slots....wish I didn't

How since then haven't been to any Caesar property exept to get slot play....I took diamomd card to trade in for black card and been going these since....they give me all the free racing forms I want and free parking and lounge acess for 10 points....To be honest I think I got diamomd the weekend you were here

also for Timonium, hopefully the racing will start to get better this year. I agree with ronsmac's post though that it's still a good day of racing to experience at least once or twice. :ThmbUp:

Anybody going to this meet? You post so much at PA (here) that you could get Mike's blessing and then go to the Timonium fair office and tell them you are representing the Press - as a regular reporter for Paceadvantage.com. and seek a free press pass..

Thenn all you have to do it continue posting - wait, why am I even encouraging you to post.. :lol: :lol:

it's a longshot, but maybe he can get in using his Maryland gaming license??:confused:

also you probably won't see any stakes races there (maybe a 25k dash) but your girlfriend and her friends might like the atmosphere a little more than pen. you can walk back and forth freely to the state fair and the track is smaller with a cozy racing environment.

I really can't wait for this fair!!

I will be doing Tim/CT doubleheaders as well. With Timonium adding racing on Thursday, there will now be 5 doubleheaders available. On Sunday (08/25) they are currently scheduled to race head to head. On Labor Day Monday, it looks like Timonium is the show, unlike other years when they were head to head. Last year field sizes were respectable, but I'm a bit concerned this year with Timonium picking up an additional 3 race days. Maybe they will lessen the number of races on the less popular days of the week, but I hope not.

I-70 at exit 68 has a number of fast food places. The Maryland Food Court (down inside the fair) has great selections as well, but you need to hustle so that you do not miss any live races.

Rough directions from Timonium to Charles Town:
I-83 South (for about 1 mile)
I-695 West (towards Pikesville)
I-70 West (towards Frederick)
At Frederick, take 15/340 South, then stay to the right on 340 when they split off after about 3 miles.
This will take you to the backside entrance of the CT track.
The usual time from Tim to CT (with "normal" slow traffic and backups) is about 1.75 hours.

Several spots have slow traffic and/or backups, particularly on weekdays, so one needs to get away very quickly from Timonium after the last race if you want to make Charles Town's first race post of 7:15 p.m.

Hey, I thought I was the one who is supposed to get excited about fair horseracing. :)

With this year's Timonium/Charles Town schedule, I might find out it really is possible to Overdose on live racing. :faint:

Fortunately the (tired of racing) feeling goes away after about day or two. :D

BTW, last year I DID miss the last 4 days of racing at Timonium. I had no choice if I wanted to add racing at Elko, Nevada to my track collection list.

Although you won't get much gambling in you can swing a quadruple header or even more...

Parx -->harrahs Philly--->Delaware--->timonium by 4pm---> hit the Charlestown races at night......might even be able to squeeze in some rosecroft!!

You should go for it.....I'm sure you would be the first person to attend live racing at 5 different tracks in a day....maybe even 6!!!! Nobody could ever take that away from you!!!!

Delaware--> timonium--->Charlestown = cakewalk tripleheader

I don't think the 5-bagger is possible due to track schedules. Harrahs doesn't run on Saturdays and Delaware doesn't run on Sunday, plus the CT Sunday cards are at 1PM which would make it almost impossible because of the travel.

I actually may try this on Saturday August 24th: Parx, Delaware Park, Timonium Fair, Charles Town.

It doesn't get any better then that!!!

I guess it would be possible on that Saturday to do this cuz time does allow for it but again it would only be a race or 2 max...

Start at mth.....
Drive to parx
Parx to Delaware...
Delaware to timonium
Timonium to Charlestown....

Again not a easy day but one you may go down in history for....I don't think anybody has ever done it before all straight horses....it might be easier in Florida with dogs and jai alai mixed in

I didn't even factor Monmouth into the equation. I'm about 1 hour southwest from Monmouth in the Mount Holly area. I started looking into the possibilities, but I don't think it's possible to get down to Timonium before their last race. Starting from Monmouth with first post at 12:50 I probably couldn't get to Timonium until ~5PM.

Each leg of travel for MP -> Parx -> Del ->Tim is about 1 hr and 15 min

Your right I don't trust traffic from Delaware to timonuim....I'm not a expert on this traffic but seems like Baltimore can be a nightmare...

I remember leaving pimlico about a month ago on a rainy Friday around 515 didn't get to ac till about 10

The parx del Tim CT might be a safe quadruple header which I may have never been done before

So you flop into two pairs of 5's and not only are you not the best hand, you're third best....Un freaking real.
Worse yet, how would you like to have been the guy with the 4 of hearts?
BTW, did the guy with 4/hearts even make it to the river card? If he did, I bet he shoved a lot of chips into that pot....Ya gotta figure the odds of two straight flushes in the same hand has got to be pretty slim.

The hand was out of a science fiction novel.....and to be honest I played the hand so bad i didn't even lose that much....

Remember this is a limit game so you can't lose everything.....I called before the flop it cost $15.....after the flop obviously I'm not betting with 20 miles of fun "4 fives" so that was a no betting round.....

When the turn came I planed on check raising but nobody bets as I was first person to open betting.....so that was a blessing in disguise...

River comes to make it 4 cards to a straight flush like a idiot I bet 30 next guy calls next guy makes it 60 then next guy makes it 90....at this point I know im dead and wasn't going for 60 more so I chucked them....

Just a messed up hand.....happens more often then you think in limit games but it's just my luck at that place.....if I was in a different spot on table I lose 300 in the hand but I was trying to trap people and lost the bare min....

Poker....I hate it

Oh and as I edit this using 1 card to make the straight flush Really makes the odds less big........if we all used 2 cards it would be in the billions and it has happened many times before....2 straight flushed and the 4 of a kind gets piss...in terms of the bad beat jackpot

Yep Limit games limit strategy. The size of a player's stack cannot be used as an effective weapon. Check raises are tougher to use as a means to run people out of the pot.
Yes, that is one for the bad beat thread.
Have a friend who played in a no limit tournament in Vermont with a $300 buy in. He was in the final 6 players. He has J-J...Everyone limps in. He raises.
One folds the others call. The flop is 2-7-J..He goes all in. Three others fold and and the other guy calls. The turn is an over card...like a Q or K ...The river is a 7...I guess you can see where this is going. If your poker radar is on, you know the story. Dumbass luck the other guy has 2-7 as his hole cards.

RCI multi-jurisdictional licenses have been pretty much bogus so far as I've still had to pay the stste's individual fee as well.

I think it's misleading because if you get an RCI one state you still have to apply and pay fees in a second state.

don't get too crazy about Timonium. the five horse fields of turf, layoff, and negative class drop horses can get old real fast. then throw in a scratch or two.... :sleeping:

this thread is making me want to go back to timonium. I cashed my first ticket as a 12 or 13 year old there. do any of you locals remember Michael's lad? I guess I'll fork up the $8 or whatever it is to get in to go at least once this year.

when i'm not watching maryland eye candy stroll past or standing in line for a $4.50 pepsi I sometimes think of the guy who turned pro there in the one andy beyer book. lost two photo finishes and like half his bankroll. took the other half and went to community college.

One of my wishes is for NYRA to impose an entry fee to Aqueduct which due to the free entrance has become a magnet for any kind of a bum. I think even a $5 entrance whould have done the job....

I would have no problem paying admission if the sign said "$10 to keep the riff raff out".......go to Woodbridge otb in nj they have the highest riff raff per capita then any other betting establishment....the voucher vultures and 10 percenters swarm everytime a irs ticket is rumored to hit.......

After next Saturday I'll be living at my fathers house next to Woodbridge otb and I will take pix of the Tuesday night trash that's in there...I get 2 weeks of this garbage before I move south...

My friend and get got yelled at for rooting loud one night but at the same time the mutual managers and security guards promote the bums that sit around taking up space and wait to 10 percent for somebody.......makes no sense

Actually field sizes last year based on 7 race days were pretty decent, with the following:

4 Horses --> 2 races
5 Horses --> 4 races
6 Horses --> 12 races
7 Horses --> 15 races
8 Horses --> 10 races
9 Horses --> 6 races
10 Horses --> 2 races

The distance breakouts were:

4f --> 22 races
*6.5f --> 20 races
8.0f --> 4 races
8.5f --> 5 races
* = About distance

A few years ago they used to have 2 stakes races near the end of the meet, with purses between $35K and $50K for each race. Maybe with the additional (slots) funding this year, some stakes races might return.

For the last two years, I only remember 1 breakdown, so it has improved over the years.

No one has mentioned it yet, but for many years on the far straightaway near the turn they used to have both a big and small ferris wheel, which the horses had to have seen coming down the backstretch. Last year I think only the smaller one was there. (These and the seriously banked turns help to make Timonium the unique place it is.).

One more thing to get you excited about Timonium. They have been racing almost as long as Saratoga and Pimlico, with their first races held in 1887. It was initially harness races, which were replaced by the "flat" races at the turn of the century. They did experience some tough times over the years, and racing almost ended in 1984.

I'm glad they found a way to survive, and hope they are here for many more years. :)

... Timonium is just a fun place to watch a horse race, granted the racing is not great neither is the field size, but its just a fun experience. it reminds me of going to the New England fares with my dad as a teenager when I lived in New York.

Question.....is there a tote board in the infield or is it like Atlantic city where it's a guessing game from when you walk outside to watch the race till you see a tv screen?

Or this the tote board one one of those that are on wheels

I haven't been there in about 9 years, but they always had a tote board before then

I was lucky enough to have attended 3 of them from the now-defunct New England fair circuit. Northampton was my all-time favorite track. I was also able to attend Great Barrington, and Brockton (which still has a very tiny chance of running again.).

As to Timonium, they still have a permanent tote board in the infield. It is probably vintage 1950's or 1960's where instead of the WPS pool info rotating one cycle at a time, one can see each of the 3 separate pools at ANY time. This is helpful for those who like to look for ineffeciencies in the Place and/or Show pools.

Wheeling Downs which is now Wheeling Island greyhound track was a half mile oval. Here is a picture of the place before it burned down. They called it Mini Churchill.

They went from TB racing, to harness to now greyhounds since 1976

Sorry, but the contests are mapped out a year in advance. While I love Timonium, I'm not sure it would have appeal to those others who regularly participate in the PA contests.

Yes, I attended Ferndale in 1999. Watching and betting on the mule races was fun as well. My track-collecting friend from NY has not been there yet, so a repeat visit for me is likely in the next few years. Timonium is a 5/8 mile oval, but Ferndale and a number of other racing fairs out West are still 1/2 mile ovals for thoroughbred races. Ferndale is the only CA track that is 1/2 mile, but states like Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, North Dakota, and South Dakota still have them. They are a dying breed, so one needs to get them in while they are still there. (One now-gone track in Anthony, Kansas used to alternate horse races on their outer 1/2 mile track and dog races on their inner 1/4 mile dog track!).

The Ferndale visit was another example where I missed for good the chance to add another track to my visit list. I stayed in Ferndale several days, passing on the long drive to visit the races in Salem, OR. It happened to be Salem's last year of racing at the fair.

Yeah these tourneys are a lot of work for you guys....can't believe how u had the results today up so early....I'm not attacking this pool the right way I'm foreign to these contests....I go 3/3 and made up some ground I guess with a even money 5/2 and 7/2 winner....Ill learn eventually...

Cj's dad said yesterday about breakdowns at tim which I Definitly believe but how bout the breakdowns on a half at ferndale....flats on a half has to be a recipe for broken cannon bones on horses....very sad

Hoping for a safe Tim meet coming up

Tons of integrity!!Some of the races at those fairs were so obviously crooked, that they made 3/5 look like a gift sometimes to quote ed burgart. as crazy as it sounds as a teenager, oh and they did let 14 year olds bit at the windows by the way, I never had a losing meet at any of the three fairs back to back yrs. I wish I could say the same for the rest of my horse racing career.

The NJ Fair circuit used to be big time. It would run all summer.
Egyptian Acres( Stand Dancer's farm) in New Egypt, BIG Z farm in Montague, Johnson Park, Gaitway in Millstone,etc...This was the showcase circuit for NJ Breds. None were Pari mutuel but the racing was fun and the crowds were large.
