If they can shut down the city of Boston with a snap of a finger, then anything is possible, imo...They opened it back up, didn't they?
Strange none of these right wing nuts were worried when Bush shut down the entire country not just a city after 911. My boss was stuck in Chicago for a week back then. They shut down Nebraska football for 10 days. If they could do that, then they could have done anything. Yet no right wing conspiracy plots back then. Hum, Maybe cause one of theirs was calling the shots instead of a liberal black man.

Robert Goren,
you just posted the most inaccurate and ignorant comment I have ever read of yours..........

Tom:
I remember several of your posts back in the last part of Bush's administration days.
You were very, very critical of some of his actions, especially "homeland security" issues. I often thought you were being too critical....but you weren't. You were right. You are an entertaining funny guy, but you are also very sharp. Good handicappers are always very good at evaluating these political situations correctly.

YOUR COMPUTER MAY ALREADY BE HACKED WITH NSA INSIDE

“that the National Security Agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.” Say what?? They can see the plaintext on my computer before I encrypt it? That defeats any/all encryption methods. How could they do that?

http://steveblank.com/2013/07/15/your-computer-may-already-be-hacked-nsa-inside/

In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
George Orwell

In Russia, President Putin’s office just stopped using PC’s and switched to typewriters. What do they know that we don’t?

Perhaps it’s Intel NSA inside.
----

For those of you who haven’t kept up, the National Security Agency (NSA’s) Prism program has been in the news. Prism provides the NSA with access to data on the servers of Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, etc.

Prism is just a part of the NSA’s larger mass electronic surveillance program that covers every possible path someone might use to communicate; tapping raw data as it flows through fiber optic cables and Internet peering points, copying the addressees on all letters you physically mail, all credit card purchases, your phone calls and your location (courtesy your smart phone.)

The good thing is Obama (or any president) only gets 8 years in office.

So we are still OK for the time being.

I am hopeful. Look at Egypt. They threw out their democratically elected leader with Muslim Brotherhood allies because he tried to decree that all decisions he made were not subject to appeal of any other authority. He tried to become a dictator.

The U.S. keeps moving toward that outcome. If it is true that Intel allows the NSA to have access to their computer chips so that NSA can install spying software on them then we are definitely going down the wrong path. This is the military/industrial complex Ike warned us about.

Still, this government exists to serve its people -- not the other way around. I am glad that various groups have filed suit against the NSA and am interested in seeing the outcome.

The NSA works for us.

Power is taken, not given. Citizens need to be proactive and use their collective power to make sure our government serves our interests and that they don't abuse their power and use it against us.

"Keeping the NSA in Perspective"

http://www.stratfor.com/weekly/keeping-nsa-perspective

The problem with the war on terror is that it has no criteria of success that is potentially obtainable. It defines no level of terrorism that is tolerable but has as its goal the elimination of all terrorism, not just from Islamic sources but from all sources. That is simply never going to happen and therefore, PRISM and its attendant programs will never end. These intrusions, unlike all prior ones, have set a condition for success that is unattainable, and therefore the suspension of civil rights is permanent. Without a constitutional amendment, formal declaration of war or declaration of a state of emergency, the executive branch has overridden fundamental limits on its powers and protections for citizens.

At the same time, the threat that PRISM is fighting must be kept in perspective. Some terrorist threats are dangerous, but you simply cannot stop every nut who wants to pop off a pipe bomb for a political cause. So the critical question is whether the danger posed by terrorism is sufficient to justify indifference to the spirit of the Constitution, despite the current state of the law. If it is, then formally declare war or declare a state of emergency. The danger of PRISM and other programs is that the decision to build it was not made after the Congress and the president were required to make a clear finding on war and peace. That was the point where they undermined the Constitution, and the American public is responsible for allowing them to do so.

You're a year younger than me, but yes, you are an old lady. Old in your attitudes. Old in your beliefs. Democracy doesn't fail because people are looking for welfare. It fails because greedy people want everything for themselves and nothing for anyone else.

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I'd like to know which government officials determined the Constitution no longer applies, now that NSA can read your emails as you're typing them.

Here is what's interesting about the 4th amendment...

http://civilliberty.about.com/od/lawenforcementterrorism/p/4th_amendment.htm

The Fourth Amendment was written directly in response to British general warrants (called Writs of Assistance), in which the Crown would grant general search powers to British law enforcement official. These officials could search virtually any home they liked, at any time they liked, for any reason they liked or for no reason at all. Since many of the founding fathers were smugglers, this was an especially unpopular concept in the colonies.

The founding fathers were smugglers. So unwarranted searches were a big deal to them. So much so that they made it part of the freakin' U.S. Constitution!

If something was good enough for our founders then it's good enough for me. Amazing how we've forgotten the lessons of history.

I have a newfound respect for modern day moonshiners.

Here is why NSA secret snooping on U.S. citizens is dangerous:

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., asked Robert S. Litt, general counsel in the Office of Director of National Intelligence, whether he really believed the government could keep such a vast surveillance program a secret forever.

"Well," Litt replied, "we tried."

There is absolutely no reason to withhold information from elected officials. The elected officials represent the citizens of the U.S. The citizens of the U.S. are the U.S. The government and its various agencies are NOT the U.S.

The elected officials represent the citizens and when the citizens find out that that their representatives are not doing their jobs then the citizens vote them out of office. When government agencies overstep their bounds the whole country is put in jeopardy because of the greed and thirst for power of a few.

Yeah...the theory is that, in a "democracy", the PEOPLE have the power...while our elected officials are in essence hired by us to serve us...and protect our interests.

But, as we all know, there is a great deal of difference between "theory" and "practice"...

These "public servants" have now declared themselves to be our LEADERS...which wouldn't be so bad, if they could somehow keep from leading us to disaster.

Very good, at least theres some here with half a brain...........the usual theme is..."its the lefts fault"....or, "Its the rights fault". People have been getting snookered with this left, right crap for years and they still buy it. Gee, you would think people would wake up, but i think they like being told what to do, what to think and how to think it....they are that lazy or not that bright. This crap is scary, yet the media and most on both sides of the political class are blaming the people that let it out ....and morons are buying it....thats even scarier. Nothing to see here......we have to moniter your behavior....to keep you safe...we know whats best for you....without you knowing what we are up to......it goes against everything your grandfather, uncle or great grandfather may have died for to protect...but we know whats best for you....and we are watching you to save you....... "Lets call it the Patriot Act".....and "Have special, secret FISA courts." I have a newfound respect for modern day moonshiners. Thank You

At my last class reunion someone brought some moonshine. I had never tried it. It was surprisingly good!

I asked my classmate where it came from. My classmate answered, "You don't ask."

A grandparent of mine spent a year in Pendleton State Penitentiary in Indiana during prohibition for getting caught making moonshine. He would have gotten off easier, but he refused to rat out on his two partners.

He was a rural farmer, a young man with a wife and a few kids. It must have been hard on his family.

Looking back, I would have to say the bigger crime is the cruel and unusual punishment he had to endure due to a stupid law.

I'm sure the gov spent more money keeping in him in prison for a year than the taxes he supposedly didn't pay on his "illegal" revenue.

Fortunately, the country has matured. We don't have any dumb laws any more.

Oh wait. NSA might be monitoring this board. I LOVE MY COUNTRY! :D

I was thinking the same thing, Tom.

I read where in some towns any person could request the surveillance photographs of any cars the police had on file. The police in at least one of those towns no longer provide the photos.

I think we should be able to ask for the photos of the police chief's personal car and know it's whereabouts over the last year. I'd like to see how many times it's parked not too far from the local massage parlor.

We need to form citizen's groups to follow our elected officials everywhere they go and report.
