This is for Firefox users. If you don't want web sites knowing your
location, there is a fix for that. I was wondering how some ads knew
where I was located so I checked around and came up with this work
around.

If you don't want sites to know where you're coming from, type about:config into the location bar and then find the network.http.sendRefererHeader record. Double click on it, and change the "2" value to "0" to prevent Web sites from seeing your referrer information.

I might add that when you type about:config you'll have to promise
Mozella that you will be real careful. Click on OK.

Thanks! I had the first one checked to tell sites I do not wish to be tracked.
It never worked for me and I did not see the other choice. Thanks for
the clarification.
In today's world, the more things we can keep private the better.

Perhaps the tracking thing is but I think keeping sites from finding out
your location does work. I no longer see ads with pictures of men or
women just dying to meet me in Lecanto, Florida. I got the above idea
from Computer Shopper. Here is the link:

I used to use an anonymizer, so instead of ads of women that want to meet me in Minneapolis, I got ads of women that want to meet me in Denver. What difference does it make? I still got the same ads.

Furthermore, whenever I tried to Google anything I got Canadian specific answers, and there was nothing I could do to change that. Not even turning off the anonymizer. As long as the anonymizer was on when I first logged on to the internet, Google thought I was in Canada.

I'd advise moving quickly before the NSA finds out.

I really don't mind if they know I live in Lecanto, Florida as I am all ready
world famous here anyway.

If you're not using a proxy server or VPN your real IP address -- and thus your location -- is being tracked. That's independent of whether or not your getting ads, but will affect targeting based on your location.

Yes a proxy is a good idea if you know how to use them and adhere
to some rules. There can be a difference between free and paid
proxy's. I think "Hide My Ass" is a site they recommend. Since
it can get a bit tricky, here are some things to consider:

Important Warning: Please Read.

You must be aware of one key point when using a Proxy IP. All data that you send and receive can be intercepted by that computer and stored. Blackhat Hackers (Crackers) have been known to set up proxy servers simply to catch sensitive details and passwords from users. So remember the following two rules:

1. Never enter important passwords, credit card details or visit your online banking while connected to a proxy. Keep in mind that someone can be watching your traffic.

2. Always change back to your default connection when you have finished your session. It’s easy to forget you’re connected through a proxy. Simply reverse the steps above.

Of course paid proxy services from reputable companies will offer a greater level of security but always be aware of these issues when connecting through any proxy.
