In the first place, why was he ever a democrat? Tom, or Elkabong, or you could have written that speech for him. It contains all the Republican talking points. All the garbage about how Democrats are enslaving blacks because they provide food stamps for those in need. And how unemployment compensation makes people lazy.

Of course he doesn't mention that Democrats also support Equal Employment Opportunities which Republicans do not. Oh, Republicans say they believe everyone should have a equal chance for a job based on merit, but in the real world, without the government enforcing anti-discrimination laws, a black man would lose out to a white man with equal qualifications every time.

And because of fair housing laws, a black person can live in a nice apartment building such as the one I live in. And, they could have me for a neighbor. Hey nothing is perfect.

Guillory also talks about how the Republican Party was founded as an abolitionist party and how it was responsible for the 13th Amendment, and how it was a Republican President who issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Which is all true, but that was the freakin' 1860's and 1870's.

Starting around the time of Nixon, there was a reversal of priorities. The Democrats, who had won the South in virtually every election since the Civil War, took up the cause of Civil Rights. Republicans then went after disaffected white southern voters. They did not do this by championing the rights of black southerners. They paid lip service to everyone having equal rights, but they tried to convince every one that these would just magically appear with out any laws.

The Republican Party of today is not the Republican Party of the Civil War and Reconstruction and the Democratic Party of today is not the Democratic party of that era. In the case of the Democrats, that is a good thing.

An interesting thing to note is that Louisiana Republicans are looking for a candidate for Lt. Governor. And here comes Sen. Guillory. Hmmmmmmm.
