the "mid" formula in the other thread works great. thanks again guys!

But I have run into a snag. It doesn't seem to matter if I use "index and match" or "vlookup" I keep getting a "NA" response. If I remove the "mid formula" and use the answer, then either one works fine.

What is the trick to get that formula to work?

I thought of format but I made sure both were the same. (number format )
I am pretty sure it is something not difficult but I just don't seem to get it today.

your assistance, [and patience] is very much appreciated.

thanks!

More than one way to skin a cat, but often lack the correct idea of what is going on.
If this is not exactly what your looking for, maybe fishing at this site may help.

I am trying to do a formula similar to this:

vlookup((mid(d110,4,1)),ABC!$a$1:$b$10,2,1)

the mid out put is "4"

I am sure there is a work around for what your doing, an add in might be part of it.

Unless it is figured out here, there are several resources available on the web like this one.

THANKS FOR THE LEADS!

I finally came to my senses and used the "isnumber" function which came back false.

So I used the "value" function and now it comes back a number and it works.
