View Full Version : Limiting Coverage of Derby Card to NBC and Twin Spires?

This bugs the crap out of me, I pay $50 a month for RTN, and then on Derby Day Churchill Downs pull the complete coverage of all the races for the day from every place a person that seriously bets the races can watch them, except for there web base betting. It strains there site to the point where you can't see anything anyway, and just pisses you off.

On Dish Network the NBC sports network is an additional cost product, so I am blacked out from there. The NBC coverage of the races up to the Derby are shown like they are an inconvenience to the actual Derby coverage. If anything I bet less on this card, rather than more, and it makes me want to not bet CD or any of it's other tracks.

This stupidity no doubt effects the handle and a special day of racing, but who ever said that the minds behind these decisions have IQ's higher then mental midgets

3 days to the Preakness and my ADW doesn't know what the restrictions on video are going to be. No wonder this sport is going down the tubes!

I don't think I am going out on a limb by saying the NBC owns the rights to all video and audio productions for each of the TC events.

Somebody needs to tell NBC 37.6 MPH doesn't mean squat to anybody that watches races, they think this is NASCAR?

And TVG blacks out all video streams of the Derby and I'm pretty sure the other 2 legs of the TC. They say to switch to NBC Sports for the under card, then to NBC for the big race. Many people don't have NBC Sports. Plus the NBC coverage is sad. They seem to think people really care about the owner's grandaughter or some other silly unrelated story as we horseplayers struggle to see at least a minute of the post parade.
They're approaching the gate.....but wait...let's go to a stupid commercial!

I think it will not be long before part or all of the Triple Crown races will be on a cable television outlet.

Horseplayers need to understand the broadcast is not geared towards them but to the casual fan. That will never change

Been said a million times......yet?

The ratings are up. NBC is happy. They aren't going to change a damn thing. "Regular people" outnumber horseplayers by the millions. They like the human interest stuff. Get over it

Seems there is a very easy solution to the problem, leave us alone to watch it on our computers or RTN that we pay $50 dollars a month for, don't make us watch your coverage. Everyone would be happy, but noooooooo, somebody says we have to control the content and piss off our regular customers that support the sport 365 days years. I says if they take away my coverage on RTN, I'm not betting Pimlico period.

We do understand it, just don't like it. They should leave the internet/ADW broadcasts alone for the regulars. Plus, there are some casual fans that don't like the TV coverage either.

The networks talk to casual fans like second graders. Even the 'expert' commentators dumb down their comments.
I mute the volume except for when they give their analysis and when the last horse loads.
I get tired of yelling at the tv, " you have a firm grasp on the painfully obvious"...

I beg to differ. I have been at TC viewing parties where casual fans have no clue how fast the horses can run....They like that stuff.

"make us watch your coverage'....That IS the point. Viewers equal ratings. Ratings equal ad dollars. Ad dollars keep sports programming from going Pay Per View.
By writing into the contract the all other video sources be blacked out, NBC in THEIR opinion, is protecting their advertisers.
Little do they know that for example myself, the moment they go to black before a commercial, I hit the mute button.
Most commercials IMO range from mild annoyance to just stupid.
Ad execs must be some of the most out of touch people on planet Earth.

I don't know what they plan for Saturday, but today they had coverage on RTN. I did notice that you can watch the races on Pimlico website, so perhaps they will leave us alone.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

That and pink hats.
My 2 cents - NO main stream coverage at all - just the ADWs and websites - lets those who support the game 365 days a year be not inconvenienced on our big days. Screw the general public an screw NBC. What the racing industry is doing is flipping us off by selling exclusive contracts. how many new bettors do we actually pick up off the hats show, the pink crap, the personal insight stories.......blecccch! If anything, the stupid pink starting gate yesterday would keep me away from the track.

Yes, any sports with exclusive contracts are selling out the fans. Tell the NFL that too.

Post sober Tom.

Maybe if you sobered up your would know what sober sounds like. This isn't the NFL...not even close. Only connection is the beer tents, which is where your confusing may be coming from.

You don't think the hassle for the every-day players caused by limiting is selling out?
I do.

How does this contract limiting access help the players who don't wear pink hats?

I have nothing to add in rebuttal to your commentary.
I make steering clear of negative people a personal cause.

No...Network coverage exposes the sport to wider audience.
Got a problem with that?
Oh..I forgot..Screw the newbs. Screw NBC.
Three days per year this happens and you express utter contempt for those not exactly like you.

Tom, c'mon. I know you and stillriledup and whiffleball guy post 50 times a day, but what you said made no sense.

I know it's just about the post count and hey, you'll always be the king, but what was your point, that companies that pay money for the right to show a race shouldn't be allowed to show a race? You need to live in the real world.

Tom
05-20-2013, 06:27 PM
Sorry the idea was over your head.
I do live in the real world, and that is why I call out A******* when I see them.

My point was that the tracks, that depend on us 364 days a year are A******* for making life harder for us on the bi days. I doubt NBC coverage brought 7 new bettors to the game. I would prefer NO outside coverage - just what we have every other day. The hat people would find another sport to infect.

What you prefer does not fit the reality of tv, advertising and the sale of rights.
Remember the network( NBC) pay large sums of money for those television rights. Part of that money goes to keep the sport going.
I think you can put up with a minor inconvenience.

Oh yes you do. Otherwise you would not respond to what you realize is a sensible post.
I never said I was going to ignore you. I stated I try to avoid irrational posts.
Look, you have a gripe that a very small minority of people may relate to.
Is a few hours out of your entire year worth the venom of "Screw NBC" .."Screw the casual fan"?
Assuming you are an everyday player who bets quite a bit of money, is your problem that the powers that be in horse racing do not cater to you in a similar manner that say, casino managements treat their whales?
