Seems like many of the races are at 4.5 F.

Anyone know why?

they do that every year because most of the horses in that place are not fit enough to go any longer. next week i think they will go up to 5/8ths

years ago almost all the tracks did the same thing, start with a smaller distance and work their way up with time.

The other day, Fairmount finally had its first route race. Before that, all races had been 6 furlongs or below.

Thanks Lambo and 17. I knew there must have been a reason.

It wasn't all that many years ago Calder used to do the same thing, despite the fact they were picking up where Gulfstream and Tampa left off.

I was listening to Tony Calo on the 2nd day of the meet, and he said the new Finger Lakes racing sec. Bill Couch (many yrs spent at Thistledown) was trying to card some routes earlier than usual, which Calo said he appreciated..

I think they've had three so far this year, and one each on Mon. & Tues.
