I'm sure he went through the pearly gates at 75 mph in a Red Corvette after a stop at the Quick Sack!

Saw it on twitter, brought a tear to my eye.

There is video of him at Ball State about a month ago, on youtube. He was struggling to perform. They mentioned he wasn't a hundred percent. Obvious lung problems at that time

I am surprised that he made it to 81, but it is a shock to see that he is gone. Saw him several times and consider him the best ever. My favorite is one of his early hits, Seasons of My Heart. RIP George.

Ronnie Dunn added: "The greatest country blues singer to ever live."

Of any genre. Joe Williams said George was the best.

Three of my personal Jones favorites (all on the humorous rather than mournful side of his catalog):

I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair (the video with George Foreman and various country stars participating)

We Didn't See A Thing (Duet with Ray Charles)

When You're Ugly Like Us (You've Just Naturally Got to Be Cool) (Duet with Johnny Paycheck)

My favorite 'cry in your beer' song:

Hell stays open all night long

This one hurts more than the usual celebrity passing. In my car resides a CD of his hits that gets played often on long lonely road trips. It will get played again shortly when I go out to do a few errands. My favorite is an old drinking song, "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me Her Memory Will."

Sandy Pinkard and Richard Bowden satirized it as "She Thinks I Steal Cars"

What is it about long road trips and country music - They just go together.

Legend. R.I.P. George, you will be missed !

Jason Aldean , Dirt Road Anthem

"Yeah I'm chillin' on a dirt road
Laid back swervin' like I'm George Jones
Smoke rollin' out the window
An ice cold beer sittin' in the console
Memory lane up in the headlights
It's got me reminiscing on them good times
I'm turnin' off a real life drive and that's right
I'm hittin' easy street on mud tires"

Good point, darned if I know why, but the old country CDs do seem to get reached for on the open road. Along with George, another favorite of mine is one by Merle Haggard. "Okie From Muscogee", still very popular with we right wingers, is the top choice, and gets played often.
