Lets play a little game, you are Stonestreet Stable, owner of the very fast and talented Kauai Katie, would you enter in today's 7f 75K ungraded stakes race at Aqu or go for next week's 150K Eight Bells G3 7f at CD? I know she was 4 graded wins already, but I find this decision puzzling. Wouldn't she has just as much chance of winning next week? Why doesn't Pletcher want to race her there?

She was nominated to the Eight Belles, along with 44 others - including three other Pletchers and some pretty nice, fast fillies (Midnight Lucky, et al) - and considering she's 1-9 for $75k today, it probably became a simple matter of taking the money today in this spot and not having to work terrible hard to do it compared to what may be on the horizon in the other spot. I can't say that I would disagree if I were Stonerstreet.

edited to add PPS for Eight Belles nominees, which may make the decision a bit easier to grasp.

Figured neither race really constituted an end-game plan and this was the much better spot to get a win and not empty the tank for something down the line. The Acorn surely makes sense now that you mention it.

Anybody ever recall a horse being 1/9 on the morning line before?

I've seen plenty of 1-9 horses on the morning line, but the ones I remember are from years ago.

Wajima was 1-20 ML in the 1975 Jockey Club Gold Cup after Forego scratched earlier in the week as I recall and he got beat as well.

They could run Katie a few days from now, and she would still win with complete ease against a field like that.
By choosing that race, they still get half of what the paycheck may have been, and she was a lock.
All that was was a seven furlong work.
