You seem to be affected by something that bites most recreational bettors when they try to make a profit by betting--the pressure of trying to succeed works against them. That is, in normal "fun" handicapping, one can be misled about whether one is winning or losing. Occasional scores make it all seem great.

When one starts keeping detailed records of wins and losses, the situation changes completely. And one's approach to handicapping races suddenly assumes a significance and importance that it lacked before. That approach involves more pressure to succeed, but works against that very goal by changing whatever previously worked successfully.

It is what many call a "choking point"--a situation in which wagers suddenly become significant and meaningful, rather than "play." It is something to be aware of, and it is useful to realize that it is not all that unusual. Most either adjust to it and go forward, or give up and take a month or two off. Whichever is chosen, the important thing to realize is that it is not that races have suddenly become indecipherable--it is that your approach to making selections has changed.

It is actually beneficial in the long term. Professional bettors have to deal with it continually. Reality checks are a necessary component of successful race analysis.
