It's interesting how graphic the images of the Boston bombings in the media have been, yet there have been very few graphic images published of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

One comment on this article suggested that graphic images of war can be used to stop the war. Graphic images of Boston can be used to start a war.
There is a certain logic to that.
Most likely explanation is that media had free reign during the Boston bombings while in the war zones media was embedded and had to follow the military's instructions.
