Dewey Square 8-1? Too much respect. Ground Transport and Abraham 8-1? Not nearly enough respect.

FYI- for anyone planning on playing the Ill Derby/Sixty Sails card, Hawthorne started carding turf races, just in time for the torrential rains and flooding to hit. It would take a miracle for the two grass races carded for Saturday to stay on the lawn.

Absolutely zero chance of any turf racing happening at Haw on Saturday.

I couldn't find the CDI(Arlington and Dick D)screw Hawthorne once again forum so pretty sure it belongs here, as this will be a Preakness prep for some horses.

It would be interesting to see Pletcher's record at Hawthorne. It may not be quite to the level Baffert is at Oaklawn, but it seems everything he sends to Stickney is ready to roll.

I like him for the win. He gets a much more reasonable post here.
Also like Abraham, esp if it rains, and Departing probably good enough to hit the board.

He has won the IL Derby 3 out of the 10 years since it has moved from Sportsman's to Hawthorne. The only years he hasn't had a horse run in the IL Derby at Haw were 2003 and 2010. He won the race in 2004-Pollards Vision, 2007-Cowtown Cat, 2011-Joe Vann. His other results have been--2005-2nd w/Monarch Lane, 2006-7th w/My Golden Song, 2008-4th w/Atoned, 2009-5th w/Il Postino and 8th w/Al Khali, 2012-5th w/Our Entourage.

How about the Sixty Sails? He usually sends a filly or mare in for that, also.

He also won the IL Derby in 2001 with Distilled when the race was still at Sportsman's Park but didn't include that because I was just sticking with the Hawthorne data. So, he has won 4 out of the last 12 in regards to the IL Derby.

Today was off the turf and fast. Only one winner was more than 3 back at the second call. I'll say the 13 can clear and go.

There was a headwind of about 20-25mph in the stretch today at Hawthorne, makes it very tough for any horse to make up ground in the stretch.

He has ran against Vyjack twice( who is a legit derby contender) and was bothered at the start both times and was barely beaten in the January race.

"Departing-is my wiseguy horse. He topped out before the Louisiana Derby and had some pretty sizable trip issues and might not have been at his best either. On a potential bounceback and solid distance breeding on both sides and a pressing style I think he's a major player."

This is my quote from the Goldcents thread the other day.At 9/5 I was surprised and took a piece, but how much glory is involved with a 9/5 shot?I still think he would have hit at least the exotics at a big price in the Derby.Conflicting feelings here. But nice run.Anybody got a rough figure?Just curious.

That's cool.I didn't want to sit here and tout him anyway and he sure as shit isn't going to the derby. My whole get here was how can you pat yourself on the back for who might hit the derby exotics when they run in the Illinois Derby at 9/5?It was a little deflating for me.That's all.

Why is this so awesomely hilarious?I did put him in the Goldcents thread. That horse is solid but he's not otherworldy.I think the connections made a great decision and got 450K for it and he looked great doing it.Being glued to these 3's this time of year I was hoping for a larger chunk of coin.I'm glad you're having a ball with my openly displayed emotions!I live for this!:D

I know this is old but what BS that this race didn't get any points. Interesting that CDI with Duchossois wants to stick it to Hawthorne. When Arlington burned to the ground in 1985, who came to Arlington's aid to let them finish their meet, free of charge? The Carey family.

I do like how Hawthorne announcer Peter Galassi makes a point of referring to Haw's dirt track as a REAL dirt track.....opposed to the crappy, fake dirt at Arlington.

I think it would be hilarious is the Ill Derby winner comes back in the Preakness and bet the KY Derby winner, denying a triple crown possibility. And if he wins both the Preakness and Belmont, all the better.

I would like that to happen also, but if Orb or Lines of Battle win the derby, I would be shocked to see Departing in the Preakness trying to spoil the TC bid of one of those. Claiborne Farm is involved in the breeding of those two horses, and to have a gelding spoil a TC bid when you are involved in the breeding of a possible TC winner, is probably not going to happen.

I didn't like Departing today-- but I didn't like Govenor Charlie either. And I know for sure that the Sunland Derby isn't any better than the Illinois Derby in the longer view. So why is the Sunland Derby worth a bunch of points but the Illinois Derby zero?

It was a pure political power play by CDI, leaving out the Illinois Derby.

One year mean zero.
When have had an Illinois Derby winner win a Kentucky Derby in recent years.
How many UAE Winners have hit the board in the Derby? CD got it flat ass wrong - it was a business decision to penalize a rival track. it has nothing to do with the Derby. By your logic, the Wood should get no points.

A whole bunch of stakes races had entrants do nothing in the Derby and Preakness. That was just a silly take based on one horse in one race. Also, don't you think the fact the race wasn't worth points kind of kept some good horses from trying?

Didn't War Emblem come out of this race? Which doesn't make it great but no better or worse than Sunland. ANd the WOod Memorial has had drought for a while now. So it's hard to assign a real number to each race. I do think they did much better this year with awarding more pts to races as a three year old. Not fair to the Il derby though.

The Blue Grass S. has been knocked a lot since the switch to synthetics, and rightfully so in my opinion. But forget that, anybody care to guess the last time the winner of the Blue Grass won a Triple Crown race?

1993, Prairie Bayou, Preakness.
