One of racing's great warriors, Cost Of Freedom, races today (Apr 6) in the 3rd race at Golden Gate. If he wins the lions share of the 15,000 purse, he will be a few hundred dollars away from becoming a millionaire at age 10.

COF had 'physical problems' in 2008 before the Breeders Cup and was scratched and he's still going...not too many horses with 'physical problems' in 2008 are still around racing.

Such a cool horse. Almost won the BC sprint. Glad he didn't but always root for him otherwise.

Someone needs to claim him for 12,500 and retire him. He's earned it.

I'm not - that was a very tough beat for me
I was very high on him and didn't have the winner - damn, he battled hard from the inside that day...who won it...Furthest Land??

Dancing in Silks won in 2009. Joel Rosario up. Expertly agented by a brilliant announcer. About 2 hours after that my wife and I witnessed something that was UN-BE-LIE-VABLE:jump:

Hopefully not . Maggi Moss , Donna Keen and bunch of other retirement
farms are bidding for him .
The connections are holding out for more $$$ . Donna who is the wife of
trainer Dallas Keen is working on getting the groups together to go forward
with a strategy . The posts are up on FB.

These people trying to retire him , most are from the racing community .
To have to go at it like this when an older horse is concerned is
embarrassing and downright wrong . These are wonderful people
who take on the after care . They badly need their funds Why would
you want to make a profit from them . Greed !

Names haven't been dropped yet but we all have. access to that .
It it gets too out of hand that will happen .

I would wait till Jan 19th, take him to Turf, drop him in for 3000 NW3M and let him rock and roll.
Of course I'm sure one of me or Hannibalsmith will find something that hits the condition he shows up in.
It's the next Lookn Wild or Conclave

And if he's going to stay in training awaiting the mercy claim, I'm sure that sounds like a pretty good plan to him too.

Carl O Callaghan

Poor cost of freedom 10yrs old show your class men and retire him already hasn't he done enough runs 2nd last today for $8000 Maggi Moss Help us please

He and John Malone are meeting with the trainer today , they both know him and he wants to arrange it so that he's given up at the claim price .
They are all saints and hopefully this will work out . I doubt the trainer wants to be involved with all this talk going on .

I'd be hard pressed to call Carl O'Callaghan a trainer
He's a singer, songwriter, entertainer, philanthropist, photographer,
Super super funny guy though.

They are on the track , they know people , apparently the other individual Malone spoke with Harris Farms the breeder . Once it goes around and around like this , all those involved are forced to do the right thing .
I'm grateful for that !

I'm not sure they are forced to do anything
They should do certain things yes
But they put up the money, they have the horse
They can do whatever they want
Why is a stakes horse more important than an older battled claimer.
Yes the old owners who made money should step up, but it's hard to expect others to.

I did not mean forced literally .Let's just say. they are saving face . Look ,Three Chimneys Farm has taken in some of theirs . I wish they could
save all the old warriors but the precedent has to start somewhere in
hopes that the smaller stables in minor tracks will follow . Cali rescues are
reaching out to Los Al and all the larger retirement groups have been
making their presence known elsewhere . They do the best they can and believe me they retire horses you and I have never heard of , they are
great folks doing the best they can .

Some of you might remember these horses , Tortuga Straits . Maggi claimed and retired him.
Danger Storm , he was found at an auction lot , , she bought him too .

One of the comments here got to me some .
People in the business can look the other way . If some can afford to and the sport has been good to them .They don't have to step up but it is a kind and humane thing to do . Maybe the industry will be begin to have a better
reputation and more uplifting stories will appear the NY Times and such .
There are some really good folks in this business . Let them shine !

I don't understand the Tortuga Straight claim? The horse won and likes what hes doing otherwise he wouldn't of won. If the horse was running dead last and showed no interest then I can understand the claim.

Cost of Freedom just won for 16K at Golden Gate. he ran bad yesterday and everyone is jumping at the owner who claimed him. Again if the horse had no interest then I can understand people wanting to retire him.

People have wanted COS off the track for quite a while , if someone in the industry feels he is vulnerable or knows more . That's enough for me ,
he earned his keep .I it's not their legs , then it could be respiratory so they
can compete with slower horses . They will run like the pro they are so
often regardless .
Did you know Danger Storm that was found in the bottom of pit auction
lot won his last race ? So why was a winner cast off ?

No answers yet . but as MM puts it . Those of you who left him tied to a slaughter truck know who you are .
Obviously something went very wrong with him after his last winning race .

They got him from New Holland for 650.00

Regarding Tortuga Strait ,. I have read that Thomas Amos helped to get him retired too . Maybe he knew something about him . Like I said , Racing
folks are trying to help out here . Good for them they are making a difference .

It looks like Cecil Barbara is privately purchasing and retiring him .
The Barbers did pretty well with him after claiming COS for 50,000 .
He won the Ancient Title and came in third in the BC sprint shortly after .

Hopefully it's a done deal .

Update .
It looks good , he will be retired and it appears the work of Deb Jones ,
Maggi Moss , Carl O'Callahan John Malone began and completed it .

A paypal account was set up and donations came in also from Sadler , Miller
and facebook fans . Looks like they have asked the Barbers for the balance .
Now that wasn't so hard

Happy Retirement to this hard working veteran!

The allegation is pretty much that . Although he said it hadn't all cleared

The horse is looking fine though , hanging out and rolling in his paddock
under Malone's care .
