...and they even realize it will hurt business! Interesting decision.

We had another "incident" at Santa Anita yesterday.
Horse goes in the gate 7/2......crosses wire in front 9/5!
The few people at the track were not happy.

Pinnacle has Oaklawn today, so does ehorse.
They both have Gulfstream also.
What sites did they cut off?

They are probably just looking out for the common everyday bettor who is pissed that they have a 3-1 horse in the gate and get 5.80 or 6.20. I can see where they are coming from. Basically just want to please the fans in attendance, and not have as much of a odds drop.

Why do the odds only drop on the winner?

today's archived show, first 8 minuets in off the air, but the guy from Oaklawn comes on about half way through the show....worth listening to.

Ranchwest, It's been my observation that the odds don't just drop on winners--and in my case they frequently rise on the horses I wager on. I love it when that happens!

I think I had that horse the other day. You start to get a little use to odds dropping somewhat, but it seemed right before the wire I seen his odds much lower than usual.I mean right before the wire his odds dropped, again! They have to figure something out to correct this.

My understanding of that is while you may be able to make a wager at an offshore site, that offshore site may not necessarily be able to lay that wager off at the track.

So they are booking the bets?

Thanks Pace Cap'n, I didn't think about that possibility.

I did listen to the interview with the Oaklawn executive, what a bunch of BS from him! Hot dogs and $2 win bettors indeed! If he thinks this group is going to support the horseracing industry (including his executive salery), and the big bettors offshore will return to play a 20% take-out, he's nuts. The owner of Oaklawn should fire him

The following is supposition on my part, but based on material I have read on various web sites:

If, after a period of time, you are profiled as a proven winner, and they are not able to lay off your action, they will place limits on your wagers.

How much does the money live patrons pay for parking, entry, program, and incidentals figure into the track's income and ability to pay track support personnel?

Less and less (and less!) because there are fewer and fewer live patrons. Casinos and lotteries don't charge for parking, and only a few tracks can get away with it today either. The price of making a bet is too high at the track, that's why people don't go. Even before the offshore rebates became a factor, you had people betting at home with youbet or other U.S. based pari-mutual company. They did so to save money from "incidentals" as one major reason. I seriously doubt they can be persuaded to come back to the track and pay (or not pay!) for parking. It's the 20% take-out that needs to go away first. Racetracks will have to compete or they will not survive.

BUCKEYE;
YOU HAVE EVIDENTLY NEVER BEEN TO OAKLAWN.THIS TRACK HAS MORE LIVE FANS THAN MOST EVERY TRACK IN THE COUNTRY MAYBE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DMR AND SAR. I HAVE BEEN THERE ON ARK. DERBY DAY WITH OVER 50,000 OTHERS.THIS IS THE 100 YEAR OF LIVE RACING SO SOMETHING IS GOING WELL.
I THINK THEY WILL SURVIVE WITHOUT TH E OFF SHORE "BIG BETTORS. AND WHEN THERE IS NO LIVE RACING THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR PARKING OR ADDMISSION.

P.S THE ONLY THING THAT HURTS US IS THE NASTY WEATHER WE GET DURING THE LIVE MEET,

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE SOMEDAY

Gene,
I used to go every year to Oaklawn. You are sure right about the crowds on the weekends. One thing I noticed about Oaklawn during my days there, that is different from any other racetrack, the show pool always had more total money in it than the place pool. This happened every race. Is it still that way?

I NEVER CHECKED THE POOLS . BUT THE ONE THING THAT IS VERY DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS TRACK IS THE NUMBER OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAT ATTEND. ON WEEKENDS IT IS AMAZING HOW MANY YOUNG PEOPLE(20-40)
ON OPENING DAY THEY HAD THEIR FAMOUS $4.50 CORNED BEEF SAND. FOR .50CENTS. THEY RAN OUT IN THE 5 RACE. ALSO HOT DOGS AND SOFT DRINKS FOR 10 CENTS
GOOD LUCK GENE:)

If you read or listen to the Oaklawn guy Geiger I think, he says they tried to work out a new contract rate with these off shore sites, but it didnot work out. I would guess that a higher rate would cut into the rebates the off shores are giving the whales, so they were not willing to agree to it. Hence they cut them off. I have started to play Oaklawn instead of as much gulfstream and santa anita. If only they had a turf course !!
