I've recently been reviewing my wagering strategies on both the thoroughbreds and harness races. I've mainly been betting win only the last couple of weeks. But, as you know when you're betting the longer odds horses, at times you're going to inevitably hit those exasperating, nerve-wracking losing streaks. What to do?

I decided to try something different on Fri. Feb. 13. Instead of just straight win bets or equal amounts to win and place, I decided on one formula for the thorughbreds and a couple of formulas for the harness:

For example...If I formerly bet 3 UNITS TO WIN ONLY at the thoroughbreds or harness, I've changed that now to:

THOROUGHBREDS -- 2 UNITS TO WIN, 1 UNIT TO PLACE

HARNESS -- 1 UNIT TO WIN, 2 UNITS TO PLACE (At the larger ovals only...i.e. The Meadowlands, Woodbine/Mohawk circuit, Balmoral Park and Cal Expo).

HARNESS -- 2 UNITS TO WIN, 1 UNIT TO PLACE (At 5/8 of a mile ovals)

NOTES:

...At those larger harness tracks, I find that with a combination of larger fields than they have at smaller ovals, a greater percentage of talented drivers, very competitive fields of horses (especially on Fri. and Sat. evenings at The Big M and Woodbine), along with a fair amount of tight finishes, I've decided that a bet of 1 UNIT TO WIN AND 2 UNITS TO PLACE will be a better wagering strategy. Time will tell. Cal Expo is an exception. Overall, it doesn't have a lot of talented drivers or competitive fields of horses, but I'm still going to try this new betting scheme there as well.

...Well, Dover Downs continues to be hot and cold for me this year. This week ice cold! Fortunately, after being cold at the Big M and Woodbine lately, things went better at those two tracks on Feb. 13. The new betting strategy didn't make a difference at the Big M, even though I had one winner one that kept me on the plus side of the ledger there this day. The new betting strategy saved the day in the 9th race at Woodbine however, thanks to Og's Starlett who finished 2nd at a good place price. Same thing in the 9th race at Cal Expo, on a horse named Pocket Patron N which finished 2nd in a dead heat, but still paid not too bad to place.

I'm curious what kind of straight bet strategies some of you other harness race players like to employ. Care to comment?

Thanks,

I generally make win bets on both harness and t-bred races. As a value-player, I demand 6/1 or better. Additionally, I frequently play 2 horses to win.

I see no reason to restrict your wagering to only 1 horse if you find 2 horses of value that have a a nice shot.

Just an opinion.
