Dean Martin Variety Show

i was in Tampa ;ast month and had dinner with an old friend that i haven't seen in over 40 years. my birthday came up a week later and he sent me a package full of these DVD's of the Dean Martin show.

they are great, i watch 1 one of them every night on my lap top. it just seems like entertainment has changed throughout the years. Dean and his guests acted spontaneously. everyone had sincere and happy smiles on their faces, and they were all mucho funny.

Those older shows are so refreshing. Unlike much of the reality garbage we are offered nowadays. :confused:

Good stuff for sure.
But Dean acted happy and smiling because he was usually half snapped in a lot of those shows.

Funny you mention Dean Martin - I got the biggest kick out of watch and old Matt Helm film this weekend - then I love watching old Elvis movies too.

Dean was and is my all time favorite. He was once asked if he was really a drunk. He pointed out his large and lavish house, reminded the guy of his movies etc. He asked the guy if a drunk could really do all that?

The truth is, alcohol robs you of your ambition. I know, I was a drunk for many years. In my seventies, I am getting more of my writing done than I ever did before. I do not believe Dean was really a drunk.

From what I've read Dean certainly liked to drink and probably put away quite a bit in his life, especially when he was young, but he wasn't an alcoholic. Sinatra was a heavier drinker who drank almost every night of his life except when he was recording but he still toured at least 6 months a year all over the world even when he was in his 70's. Anyone who can accomplish what these guys did in their lives can obviously handle their booze.

That's a big thing with drinking. I've known heavy drinkers who can handle it and they get up and go to work every day and have normal lives and I've known heavy drinkers who can't.

It was and they say he hardly ever came to rehearsal. There were a lot of variety shows I liked, Tom Jones, Glen Campbell, Judy Garland, Sullivan, Smothers Brothers...

Smothers Brothers - the all time BEST!
Pat Paulsen, Glen Campbell, Mason Williams, Kenny Rogers, all the top bands from the 60's - that was probably the best show ever on the tube.
Seems like we are still arguing over the same stupid crap today that we were in 1968.

I loved the Glen Campbell show. John Hartford was a favorite guest and regular He wrote " Gentle on my mind"

The Mac Davis show was great if you admire song writers.
