If you are using Windows 8 and miss your start menu and desktop, try this cheap ($.499) product:

While I don't have a W8 platform, I do follow what is going on.

Here's another way: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/add-a-self-made-start-button-to-the-windows-8-desktop/7024

Good link. Thanks.

That app also gives you back your desktop. In other words, when my Win8 opens, it looks just like Win7.

Not sure that the fix you posted does all of that.

No, it doesn't. A salient difference.

I thought that I posted this a while ago, but maybe I didn't. The Stardock version is better but if you want free...

Classic Shell (http://www.classicshell.net/)

If you don't own a tablet/touchscreen, then you shouldn't be running Windows 8.

If you do own a tablet/touchscreen, run out and get it...

Totally agree PA but the average person when buying a new P.C. goes to brick & mortar stores such as Best Buy;etc most are pre-loaded with Windows 8 which as you stated is more for touchscreen users. When I try to help new users I find myself wishing I had the classic Start button back.

Eventually I think a person can get use to the new interface but for myself on desktops I prefer the classic start button.

I could see where it would be necessary on desktops, but on my Samsung Slate, I don't miss the start button at all...not yet anyway...lol

In fact, Samsung has its own utility that brings back the start button, and I have purposely avoided installing it...
