I used to go to the sprint cars at Knoxville every weekend when I was a kid. One night during the A- main, at a time before wings were mandatory, there a very similar crash where a tire ripped to shreds and turned into shrapnel flew into the crowd and 3 rows below me a lady got her face ripped in half and several were taken away for treatment. You never think about fans being in danger, but the races were cancelled. The next week a stronger fence was in place and that was the last year for wingless sprints in Iowa. Scary stuff and I hope all those involved are ok.

They sure gave it short shrift on TV; in fact, after it occurred, they did not go back to it 'til after I switched back to golf or OSU basketball, and I sat through infield donuts, Danica Patrick, and some other post-race stuff.

Some folks 'round here try to compare horse racing management, unfavorably of course, with NAZCAR. I'm pretty sure if you think it through, you don't really want that.

The some of the youtube comments are sadly thoughtless or hateful, though. How do you wake up and walk around all day with that kind of bile in your mind all the time?
