Kind of shocked me when I read this!

I love the mysterious process that takes place when they elect a new Pope.

From what I gather it's highly unusual for a pope to resign. Tradition in the church suggest they remain till they die regardless of illness or whatever.
Believe it's happened only once where one stepped down.

The first Pope to resign in nearly 600 years.

Coincidentally I am just finishing off Dan Brown's book "Angels and Demons" which involves a sinister plot to destroy the Vatican.
Brown mentions that over the years several Popes have probably been poisoned, including Pope John Paul I who died after just serving 33 days in 1978. No autopsy is ever performed on Popes.

(Aside from that tidbit, I really wouldn't recommend this book by Brown.
The time compression of events makes it very unbelievable.)

Strangely, it was one of those books that I found difficult to NOT read once I began it, but likewise, I was never really sure if I actually liked it. But I felt the same way about the DaVinci Code too. There's something intriguing about the way he blends unique characters, crime-mystery, and then uses these settings of historical relevance as backdrops to the events that unfold in somewhat rapidfire succession.

But, at the end of it all - there just seems to be something missing - like I expect there to be some broader message that never materializes. I actually thought Angels and Demons was better at doing this and made a greater attempt with the religion/science relationships, but that particular element seemed sloppily reconciled while every other aspect of the novels seems almost obsessively meticulous with detail and precision.

They are good "trash" novels as I like to call them. Trash as in the reader won't gain anything of significance in reading them but they are mildly researched and the pacing of Brown's style makes them very quick reading.

Good airport books IMO.

The word "ridiculous" was not meant as a comment about the present Pope. It was my assessment of the practice of selecting a Pope who was already 79 years old when he took office.

Tom has made much more disparaging remarks in the past...directly aimed at people in all positions of power and authority. It didn't seem to be that big a deal.

He is the Pope...not Jesus Christ. Although there was a time when the Popes considered themselves something similar.

In any case...please forgive the intrusion. I should have known better...

The oldest Pope at the time of election was Clement X, elected in 1670 at the age of 79 years, 290 days. The oldest at the time of death was Leo XIII, elected in 1878 and 93 years, 140 days old when he died.

The youngest pope was Benedict IX who was thought to be between 18 and 20 when made Pope around 1032, but may have been as young as 11 or 12. I say made Pope rather than elected or selected, because his family was very powerful at the time and pretty much just said he was going to be Pope. I am pretty sure that Benedict is not the one the current Pope used as his inspiration.

The word "ridiculous" was not meant as a comment about the present Pope. It was my assessment of the practice of selecting a Pope who was already 79 years old when he took office.I was fully aware of this fact when I made my reply to you. I didn't think you were calling the current pope ridiculous. I knew you were calling the SELECTION of this current pope ridiculous because to you, he is was somehow too old at age 73 to take on the position.

Tom has made much more disparaging remarks in the past...directly aimed at people in all positions of power and authority. It didn't seem to be that big a deal.Yeah, no kidding. All I said was, when you use the word ridiculous to describe the selection process for pope, expect someone to take you to task. Don't feign shock that someone might have a problem with your opinion.

He is the Pope...not Jesus Christ. Although there was a time when the Popes considered themselves something similar.

In any case...please forgive the intrusion. I should have known better...Oh Lordy...here we go...can the "I'm being picked on by the PA in-crowd" not be too far around the corner?

Come on Thask...don't play that card...THAT would be RIDICULOUS....

EXCELLENT!

While his health is declining at his age, that appears to be the #1 Factor.

Behind the scenes reports suggest that in his role(s) as hard line conservative protector of the Church and its traditions and dogma, pre and during his papacy, there was waaaay too much protecting and covering up of those who should get the death penalty- the pedo abuser priests.

Not only that Jay. Anyone who has visited the 'Other Nation' in the past 20 years has observed their small towns dominated by huge ancient parishes out front.

And inside?

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooobody!

The Catholic Church in Quebec, even more so than North America, is in perilous decline. I believe only Africa and Asia are increasing membership and perhaps that is where the new Pope should come from.
