A local teen complained of abdominal pain. His mother, a nurse, took him to the emergency room where they started an IV and hooked him up to a machine that monitors heart rate and blood pressure. The machine immediately sounded an alarm, causing ER personnel to rush to his side.

The machine was set to sound the alarm whenever the patient's heart rate drops below 50. The boy is on his high school track team and is in excellent condition. His normal resting heart rate is in the low 40s.

The docs pronounced him fit and sent him home. :)

Similar thing happened to my son when he was a wildlands fire fighter.

After 2 weeks in the field, they are required to go to an ER and get a physical to continue.

When then took my son's resting heart rate (49) they said, "If you weren't one of the other 17 guys we have in here all with heart rates under 55, we'd be hospitalizing you."
