Another thought: Gomer was a Biblical name (Hosea 1:3), but the Gomer in the Bible was a woman. I wonder if that was intentional on the part of the writers.

PS: There are two Gomers in the bible. One is Japheth (as you said, son of Noah) and the other is the "promiscuous woman" that Hosea was commanded to marry by God.

Funny, but we were just speaking about this in class on Sunday.
