SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame says a story about Manti Te'o (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/517633/manti-teo)'s girlfriend dying, which he said inspired him to play better as he helped the Fighting Irish get to the BCS title game, turned out to be a hoax apparently perpetrated against the linebacker.

The university issued a news release Wednesday after Deadspin.com (http://deadspin.com/5976517/manti-teos-dead-girlfriend-the-most-heartbreaking-and-inspirational-story-of-the-college-football-season-is-a-hoax) reported it could find no record of Lennay Kekua existing.

The university says that Notre Dame coaches were informed by Te'o and his parents on Dec. 26 that Te'o had been the victim of what appeared to be a hoax. Someone using a fictitious name "apparently ingratiated herself" with Te'o, the school said, then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had died of leukemia.

The university said "the proper authorities" are investigating a "very cruel deception."

Lennay Kekua, the woman alleged to be Teo's girlfriend, does not have a death certificate, Deadspin.com reported. Stanford, where she reportedly went to school, has no record of anybody by that name.

Te'o is currently training in preparation for the NFL draft at the IMG Institute in Bradenton, Fla. He could not be reached for comment.

Really strange! A guy should know whether he has a girl friend with that name or not.

You would think so, but it seems he never met her in person. Talked on the phone and online, or at least that is what Manti has said publicly. Funny that this was kept a secret until after the big game. I truly hope he wasn't involved more in this little misunderstanding, then you can just label him as naive and gullible.

The timeline that Notre Dame laid out tonight sure gives him an excuse for playing poorly in the big game. A bunch of interviews and humiliation instead of getting himself mentally ready for it.

Call me biased as a USC fan, but I find this story quite puzzling. I am curious to know if Te'o knew...

USC brawl (http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/usc-becomes-even-bigger-joke-reports-flat-brawl-212618191--ncaaf.html)

Back on topic -- is this kid really that naive? Seems to me that he was complicit in this to some degree. "How much?" is the question that I would like to be answered.

If there was a Heisman Trophy for spinning yarns, this guy finishes second to nobody.

The Notre Dame Athletic Director sobbing hysterically was a really nice touch and pushed this story way over the top.

Deadspin's account of things sounds far more plausible than anything Te'o has said.

Makes you wonder if Rudy was real or just more Notre Dame folklore?
Strange world these days.....for sure..... :D

There are several analyses of this sordid little scheme and they ALL spell snake eyes for Te'o.

#1 This guy (a HeismanTrophy Finalist) must have a Wonderlic of -26 he's such an obtuse, gullible fool to believe this whole charade. And, if he is, he clearly should not be selected by any NFL team on the first day of the Draft. He'd be clearly as dumb as... well... a Mormon Rock!

I don't buy it.

# 2 Te'o is a Con Man of significant proportion, ginning up this tall tale for 100% self aggrandizement. For anyone who has had someone die from Cancer, or has dealt with a family life altering crises, this is simply beneath contempt. It is shameful and disgusting.

I believe this version.

Proof: He and Notre Dame were advised on De 6 that this was a hoax. TWO days later at the Heisman Show he was asked by reporter Fowler to discuss any significant event involved in the 2012 Season. Te'o immediately jumped to the ginned up tale of his "girlfriend" dieing, without Fowler asking.

And what about the press here? Apparently ESPN and CBS and ABC and the NY Times all had different days she "died". How sloppy is the reporting that nobody looked into that and why could it have occurred?

Well, obviously it's because Te'o gave them the date and HE couldn't keep track of the dates he's given one outlet from another.

# 3 He is a complete sleaze bag. Even, with a digital GF -which is kinda creepy, don't you think? Segue: When I wanted to take a girl out, I'd like to see them in the flesh- so to speak... )

WHAT MAN when faced with a serious life threatening injury to a spouse/ significant other/etc. does not ever once visit them?
When advised that they are dieing from leukemia, does not once ever go see them?

A truly F*ed up tale.

Shame on Te'o, those involved and Notre Dame, who immediately jumped to his defense!!

Hoax me once - shame on you
Hoax me twice - shame on me

Manti knew what was up (or at least he found out before the gig was up) and he says he was a victim...not buying it.

Note to Te'o:

...

I'm guessing that it isn't often that a three word sentence is composed entirely of just four letters.

You know where he met her? FANTASY Football league.

You think she's hot, you should see her imaginary sister! Va Va Vooom!

I heard Teo bought a second computer....he wanted to have a threesome!

He didn't attend the "funeral" because first dates are awkward enough when BOTH parties are alive.
