The South Point and the Orleans are reasonable and both have a good racing section and they treat horseplayers pretty well. I have stayed at both many times over the last several years in my trips to LV although pretty much the South Point the last several trips. Plenty of locals in each place.
They are both off the strip (the Orleans is much closer) and if you want to get around you will need to rent a car particularly if you are staying for any length of time. They both have shuttles (no longer free at the South Point) to the strip and back each day at regular times though that you can use.

We'll be in Vegas also in February staying at the Flamingo. Looking forward to visiting the Gambler's Book Club. It will be my first visit. I'd appreciate any tips also.

Depends on who you are and what you're looking for. A lot of the locals go to The Orleans and South Point. Orleans is closer to the strip but showing its age and some would say kinda grungy. South Point was built by the guy who owned The Orleans, I believe. It is much newer but pretty far from the action. Both cater to horse and sports players but you don't get the classy Vegas strip tourist experience. Don't know if they still have it, but SP had the greatest late night menu in their coffee shop, really, really cheap and the food was excellent.

If you want to do the classy Vegas thing, Wynn is the Rolls Royce of sports books and hotels. John Avello, if he is still running things, is Mr. Vegas Sports Book and really cares about the player but the place is very expensive. I like Mandalay Bay. It's a very nice upper end hotel and the sports and race book is big, airy and comfortable. One half is dedicated to sports the other half horses. The horse side has been pretty empty whenever I've been there. But it's been about 3 years since I've been.

Unfortunately, the Flamingo Sports Book is almost non-existent. Last time I was there the hotel was in the process of being sold. The went through a lot of SB managers. They haven't cared about the player since Bill Kane was running the joint. I would walk down to the Bally's Race and Sports Book which is frequented by some locals. You don't get the Vegas experience there as it is in the basement but right across from a decent deli and pizza place. There are a lot of steps to walk up and down at Bally's and can get kinda busy, especially on big sporting days.

If you like Italian food, try Battista's Hole in the Wall restaurant. It is a family owned place that is a fun place to eat. it is right behind the Flamingo on Audrie St off Flamingo Rd.

Hate to pee in your cornflakes, but last time i was at GBC I was not impressed, but maybe they have gotten better. I really miss the old place.

Flamingo is a great place to stay but not necessarily to play. The new sports book at Venetian/Palazzo is supposed to be amazing, but it's a tough seat to get during major events.

From a racing standpoint, Wynn is definitely worth checking out as is Bellagio.

I second the Battista's Hole in the Wall recommendation. It's behind Flamingo/across from Bally's and worth a visit.

The South Point is a great choice if you are going to just play Horses and Sports. If you are going to take in the "Vegas" experience, I would not stay at the SP, but instead, find a deal on the strip or close by. South Point offered free forms and also has a section completely devoted to horse racing. SP website has some nice specials and I believe our 2 nite package was under 79 dollars per nite for the room that included a couple of free buffets.

why would anyone go to vegas to bet horses these days? you can bet on more tracks from your house in your living room.

if you find a place that will take $100 house Q's, i will be on the next plane waiting for the doors to open!

Funny that you mention horses at Vegas. The era of the sports book has gone by. Nowdays the man cave is the best place to play the ponies. I have been considering this in planing my time.

There have been earlier threads on this topic for those willing to search. For the best rewards for low and mid level players the Stations casinos seem to be the best, with South Pointe also pretty good. For myself, practical down to earth places with decent comps and customer service wins out hands down over fancier joints with nicer ambiance. Could care less about such things as food and drink service or plush surroundings.

When you got a wife some such things are never so easy. I like South Point when I'm by myself $49.00 weekdays. Mandalay Bay with the wife.

We'll be two couples. I'll be lucky to get away the Gambler's Book Store.

Juice is higher on the strip (20 cent lines on baseball vs 10 cent line off strip) and comps are almost nonexistent. The Orleans and it's sister hotel the Gold Coast offer the best value for the horse player and sports bettor.

The Orleans (and all of it's sister [Boyd] hotels) offer a 30K free roll every week on pro football.

That and the $1.00 hot dogs (vs $9.00 at the Aria).

I totally agree. There is nothing in vegas that you cant get in your domicile. More tracks, easier wagering, more feeds at home, free pps. Some will say free drinks (which really arent free unless you are a piker and dont tip the cocktail girl.) The days of going to vegas to play the horses are over for me. Sports? Now thats a different story.

I'm not so lucky. There are a few things I can think of that I can't get at home that I can get in Vegas  .

Several years ago I stayed at South Point for the horses.
At that time, don't know if they still do, they had all the race track tv chanells on a nice big flatscreen TV in your room. (no charge)
You could bet several races downstairs and go up to your room and watch 'em.

Only thing (as mentioned before), it is a very long way from the strip.
Unless you want to go to the large Outlet Shopping mall (which is fairly close), it's kind of isolated out there.

I'll be in Vegas in February too, the 19th--23rd. I recommend either the Wynn or I really like the sports book at Aria too. The sports book manager at Aria was extremely friendly to me and is a huge horse player himself.

I like to make my KY Derby future wager at the Wynn, but I preferred Aria's atmosphere more. Aria's sports book almost feels like two, one side is dedicated to horse racing with dozens of wall mounted flat screens but also dozens of singe person cubicles with private screens and larger tables for bigger parties. And you can wager right at your table.

Thanks Guys... :ThmbUp:I'll put up another vote of confidence for The Orleans. Very nice hotel off the strip but with good shuttle service to get you there. Excellent Race Book.

Also, if you're one that likes to reward loyalty with your business they are your guys as The Orleans and The Horse Player World Series stepped up in a big way to sponsor PaceAdvantage's very own PaceAdvantage Challenge Series with an all expense paid trip to the Horse Player World Series including your seat at the tournament, travel expenses, accomodations and a few other little things.

That's a business who is giving back to the horse player. Only right that we give them our business when we can.

Enjoy your trip.

Wynn racebook is excellent - rows of plush cubicles w/individual tv's, very efficient ticket writers, + reliable waitresses comping highest shelf drinks compared to any casino.

Pretty sure I'll be recooperating here Sunday post-NHC X1V + Sunday post-HPWS tournaments :)

Came across this a few days ago. Jerry's Nugget in North Las Vegas is offering 4% of your action in comp dollars. This is pretty strong, the better horse player friendly places in LV like the Stations and South Pointe give back 2%-2 1/2%. The problem is, Jerry's is a bit of a dump and in a bad location. Have not been there in years, but my interest has been aroused. :) Am quite at home in places like this, and could care less about the fancy stuff. Have no idea if free or discounted Forms are offered.

The place is supposed to have very good food at low prices, and cheap gambling, with $3 minimun bets at the crap tables. So, play the horses and eat good food free with easily earned comps? Sounds pretty good. Have any of you guys ever been in the place recently, and if so, what were your impressions?
