Is the free tuneup from AVG any good? Safe? From this very recent article (http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/business/technology/outmaneuvered-in-their-own-game-antivirus-makers-struggle-to-adapt-668510///), it appears that no antivirus program is safe. Basically, the virus creators move too quickly, so, by the time the virus is discovered on your computer, it is too late.

If you ever find that your computer has been infiltrated, it is probably best to immediately boot with a live CD and change all of your online passwords, especially if your browser was set to "remember" passwords and web form info.

Furthermore, always boot a live CD and use its browser whenever you access your online banking, credit card account, race/sports book, online stock broker, etc. Viruses can't be written to the CD/DVD, so the OS will be fresh and uncorrupted each time you boot it.

Currently, I use the Parted Magic live CD when accessing sensitive online accounts -- it's small, fast and easy, and it boots without asking any questions. It gets you online quickly and reboots you into your installed OS in a blink. However, if you prefer a live CD/DVD with more features, try Knoppix or, perhaps, Linux Mint.
