I was looking at some stats on Equibase and came across something that blew me away. Hopefully i'm reading this correctly and if i'm not, please let me know.

I'll ask a question to you and i want you to think about what you would answer and then look at the bottom of this post to see the answer.

There are 1,762 jockeys in America who have at least 1 mount in the 2012 calendar year.....the question is this. How many of the jocks who have at least 1 mount have 0 wins for the year.

While you are pondering this question, i'll mention that out of the 7,074 trainers who have at least 1 start on the year, about 5,000 of them have at least 1 win.

Here's the answer. Out of the 1,762 jocks, almost 500 of them have ZERO wins. That blew me away, i can't believe that number is so high. If someone asked me this question i would have said about 50 or maybe 100 tops, no way i would have thought it would have been this high.

Included in these 500 are those amateur jockeys that go around riding one race here and there at various tracks, and retired jockeys that rode in one or two special races for retired jockeys, and since the stats are for N. American races only, European jockeys that rode a few stakes races here without winning.

About 150 of these jockeys only made one start.

Not to mention glorified exercise riders that have a jocks license and getting on bad barn horses.

I would think that TurnForHome offered the most likely cause, but admit that my knowledge of jockey agenting was learned from HBO's Luck.

Just curious--who are the biggest 0-fer's (most mounts no wins)?

You jinxed him - he won the 3rd race at Tampa Bay today!

That's great info - very granular. You keep a database?

7th Race at AQU Saturday

# 9 Alpha Zumba - Apprentice Pierre Tomas 0-46.

Don't think that I will include that horse in the Ridersup contest.

He has 4 other mounts on the card also.

No, Equibase does. You can go to their website and sort jockey stats by wins.

Ramon Sanchez (http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=People&searchType=J&eID=142698) has the most start I saw with 109. He rides at Camarero.

Earlie Fires is one of the 0-for-1-ers. And somebody named Pete Big Hair is winless in three, but he did get a third. That's a neat list.

(Just noticed that Zoe Cadman and PJ Cooksey are among the ones with two starts.)

This would account for the lion's share I would guess. Lots of exercise riders get a license and never get past a few actual mounts.

We had 3 or 4 over the years and sometimes it was just that they were the only ones who would actually get on the horse or sometimes they were the only ones who could get along with the horse.

My guess is these are mounts in "legends" or special all-female promotional races.
